So I have these two problems in my master bathroom, which may or may not be related: 1. There is a major ant infestation in the shower stall. Major. They're behind the tiles. I can kill the ones that get out - I applied some ant dust around the area and they were just curling up and dying there in bunches, but I've got to find a way to destroy the nest. They seem to be carpenter ants ... I've seen fragments of what seems like wood falling off the base of the shower stall. 2. A really nasty, nasty smell that comes out of the shower drain shortly after I finish showering. I really can't place the smell, but it is very pungent. I've tried using Drano to flush down the drain, and it solved the problem for about two weeks and then it started happening again. I really don't want to have to pay professionals money to come fix it. I'd rather do it myself if I can. I already just spent a truckload of money replacing two furnaces and I really cannot afford anything else right now. Anyone have suggestions on what to do/what products to buy?
Umm, I don't really have any advice or suggestions but i share your pain. I hate ants with a passion. I once woke up with an ant on me
I'm by no means an expert, but could it also be Sugar Ants? From google: Little black ants have also garnered the name "sugar ant," though their real name is, well, Little Black Ants. Not a lot is known about Little Black Ants, except that they eat just about anything (including other insects) and they really like rotting wood and dark spaces. Getting rid of little black ants, however, despite how little is known about them from a biological perspective, is as easy as getting rid of sugar ants. Sweet baits can be used to control little black ants indoors, and protein baits can be used to control little black ants outdoors.
I hope they're sugar ants, because then I would have a little more faith in the baits I just put there. But I've actually seen fragments falling off from where there is a hole in the caulking. I hear the carpenter ants are much more difficult to control.
I have the answer to your ant problem. Go to Lowes and buy some Terro liquid ant bait. Cut out a little piece of cardboard from the Terro box, put it in the path of some of the ants, and pour some of the Terro liquid on the cardboard. When the ants discover the Terro, they're gonna love it. They will circle the liquid and drink from it like it was a buffet. Then, they're gonna go back to their nest and share it with the other ants there, including the queen. Within a week the ants will be all dead. There tiny sugar ants in our house when we first moved in which would get in our pantry food. After using Terro, those critters are GONE. The stuff works! Now, we never have ant problems.

It's not ants. Pungent smell? How about this. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZxO18pS7-W8&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZxO18pS7-W8&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
This is the second time I've used Drano. The first time it only solved the problem temporarily. They're definitely not the "crazy raspberry ants". Thanks for the tip droxford. I'll definitely try that product, hopefully it works. Actually right now I've made things more difficult for myself because the powder I used previously was so powerful, the ants keep on dying around the area even though I've vacuumed the whole place. So the ants don't even get to take the bait back to the nest ... they're dead by the time they hit the floor. I mopped the area this morning to try and get rid of the toxic dust completely so hopefully they start to come out again.
Please tell me the reason it appears to be moving is the adjusting of the camera lens or something. Please. That was disturbing. I need to go clean up or something.
OH btw, could the smell be mass amounts of mold? Black mold is serious I hear. We have mold growing in one of the bed rooms after serious rain fall and it wont go away. So now were waiting on the apartment complex. But it has a bad smell to it too.
I certainly hope not. What does it smell like? Mine doesn't smell until a couple of minutes after a shower. And when it does, it's really intense, like a skunk went off inside the drain or something. It's almost like there's a gas being released from inside.
