I just do not understand how can a good (not a star) player not have an off the chart record playing next to Tmac and Yao. The 2 stars we have require so much attention and are always being double teamed leaving 2-3 players wide open for most of the time. If we are still getting shooting percentages in the 30's, then I would say that the players that we have are not good enough to play on a championship team. Over the last 2 years:

    Mike James
    Rafer Alston
    Steve Francis
    Luther Head
    John Lucas
    Bonzi Wells
    Kirk Snyder
    J. Howard
Shane Battier (not looking for his shot)
    Chuck Hayes

These players have just not done it :(

A wide open shot is every player's dream and the 2 stars are providing that to the supporting cast on daily basis just by being on the court.

What's a good open shot if you can't make them?

I used to think that we just needed to trade Battier because he was one of the few guys on the team who we could get a good player back for but i think you may have unknowingly presented another one.

Shane Battier is killing our offense. When our stars get doubled he just sits in the corner and it makes him easy to guard. We usually already have one or two other guys on the court who are offensive liabilities so our offense just stagnates. We have to trade him. On offense, Battier is like an expensive piece of jewelry that you never wear. You can always take it to the pawn shop, you may not get what its worth, but you'll get more of what you need.

I really think our guys missed the boat on how to handle being open too. They think that open always means take the shot or hold on to it until Tracy calls for the ball. If you're off, drive it in and create for someone else. Standing there should never be an option for an open player.

right, that is what I am saying. The players that we have are not good enough to score a wide open shot 65% of the time.

Shhh! dont talk too loud. Most "number gurus" in this forum dont know the FG% difference between open/uncontested shots and contested shots. They only know one FG%. You are gonna mix up their minds. :p

You strike a chord. I'd love to see the difference in data. Where do we find it?

You aint lieing buddy. Hopefully the Cavs piss Gibson off enough by not getting him touches and he demands a trade or something I dont know his contract situation. Having him back up Rafer would be awesome. Im just dreaming right now though.

Those are proprietary data that wont be available in box score. The Rockets sure have that data - they chart it themselves. Maybe also in http://www.synergysportstech.com/ but it's not available for public.

But some stat sites do have a few study papers on it. Here's one of the old charting study for the Kings.

This is why we need to get Mike Miller. Ron Artest is a good player, but he is just inconsistent and suprising in and off the court. One day he could've carried the Kings over Lakers and held Kobe to 5-50 shooting, the next day he'll be in prison.

    Or with a new Cd..

But so far, Mikael Pietrus, or Mike Miller or Corey Maggette really should be sought after... those guys can either shoot lights out or attack the rim, and they all have decent defense maybe except for Miller who has exceptional shooting so u can balance that out

I think T-Mac is a very difficult player to play with, because he is a rhythm disruptor, so if you are a player that likes to play in the flow of the game he will flat out kill you, TMac will turn you in a guy that can only shoot open 3´s and easy layups, that´s good for a guy who just can do that but it will mess a player that can do other things (for example post up or penetrate).

I would take Artest the knucklehead in an instant. Just like I would take Dennis Rodman and Vernon Maxwell in their primes too. Just too much upside for these guys to ignore.

This has been my argument for some time: this is a poor shooting team. The percentages prove it for both field goals and free throws. With Yao and TMac there are a boatload of open shots, virtually HORSE shots, and Rafer missed most of them.

The problem we have is that we have a ton of money tied up in a few players. T-mac and Yao by themselves take up 36 million, plus you have both Shane and Bobby Jackson taking up another 12 million and add Rafer for another 5 million. All together you have 53 million tied up in 5 players and our cap is what? somewher aroud 59 million. We are over the cap when you start adding players like Scola, Landry, Luther, Brooks, Steve Francis, not to mention the players we cut last year that still go against the cap like Jackie Butler and Justin Reed. Unless a guy like Cory Maggette is willing to take a pay cut, or at least have a back loaded contract I don't see it happening. Guys like Artest and Cory are looking for money, money we don't have. On top of that, Memphis isn't going to take junk for Mike Miller in a trade. They got ripped off by the Lakers, they aren't going to do that again.

Morey has said that they don't want to lose Shane and they aren't going to trade Yao and T-Mac. I don't think they are willing to part with Scola or Landry, which would be a must in any decent trade most teams would want from us. We only have the MLE to bring in free agents, so most likely we aren't going to see players we really want, we are going to see players that we are scratching are heads over trying to figure out who they are. The bottom line is you are already looking at next year's roster right now, plus or minus a few tweaks.

it's so crazy how we underestimated carl landry during the summer league...now he's going to be a major asset off the bench

i think we're going to expect the same from mike harris!!

I still prefer Artest over Miller. But it's not like it's up to DM. If Artest decides to walk, or if the Grizzlies want to make another salary dump, then we could talk.

I thought Rafer was a role player who shined next to T-Mac and Yao.

If we can move Battier for a scorer/slasher type player, I'm all for it. Battier's offense is like a pretty girl with short hair. Something's wrong with it.

I'm glad you didn't put Scolandry on the list, they have certainly 'shined' playing next to Mac and Yao ( well, mostly Mac in the latter half of the season). They are pretty impressive for NBA rookies.
