I posted an article I read on ESPN about Lebron calling out the refs. I wonder if Yao or JVG would ever consider doing that and what kind of repercussions (if any) would happen. I think Yao gets hammered more than anyone in this league, but he is so quiet, I think refs take advantage of this. What do you guys think? I think I remember JVG saying some stuff about the refs a while back, but he basically doesn't really say much. I think the real topic here is respect.

EDIT: Arenas calling out the refs also

I would prefer he earn it through his strong play rather than whining.

I would love to hear him go ballistic just once. I'd be even more excited if JVG went ballistic at least once, maybe grabbed a ref by the leg, and got himself thrown out of the game. It would be worth the double technical.

LOL - Yeah, that would be great...

On another note - I am sure everybody has noticed that sometimes Yao talks to the refs, they just turn the other way and ignore him. Refs do that sometimes to other players, don't get me wrong, I just think it happens more to Yao. I could be biased though.

By the way, the man plays hard every night and makes many shots while be fouled. I don't think thats an issue.

Wow, Arenas got fined for what he said? I don't think anything he said warrants a fine.

Except that doesn't really work for some players. If the system isn't working properly, there's nothing wrong with gaming the system.

I don't think refs really know what to do with powerful post players. Right now, that's resulting in Yao getting called for too many fouls. Which is fine - except he's not getting the benefit of the same calls on the other end.

Nothing wrong with applying a bit of pressure..

I think its almost a guarantee that when Arenas plays us today, he will go to the line at least 15-20 times.

I think he should after games like Seatlle. But most of the times he should call himeself out. how many times does something have to happen before he understands that he must try another way. The refs are going to call him for a foul everytime he steps in front of driving players with his body yet he still does it everygame. yao ming better figure out how to stay on the court and he better figure it out fast because he is going to end up costing this team a whole lot if he keeps getting in foul trouble everygame

The major concern i have with yao is his inability to play with that 2nd foul or 4th foul, he always seems to pick up a quick cheap foul that sends him to the bench. and they're usually legitamate calls. i dont know what it is with him, whether he loses concentration, or he just doesnt understand how important it is for him to be on the court rather than on the bench, or what, but he does not no how to keep himself in the game and play with fouls, he plays defense as loose and carefree as if he didn't have any fouls.

if yao ming cant figure this out now, come playoff time, all this talk about bob sura being healthy, mcgrady taking his game to another level for the playoffs, the team or whatever, will mean nothing if Yao is in foul trouble and playing 25 minutes a game.

I agreed with you. Yao needs to learn to play with fouls, still be aggressive but smart, if you foul out, so be it.

The lesson in all this in that EVERY player in the NBA has to deal with inconsistent, unjust calls by the referees, and that EVERY fan of every team feels that they are unjustly punished and singled out by the referees - see Phil Jackson, Mark Cuban, etc etc etc.

I bet some variation of "worst officiating I have ever seen" is posted on almost every single sports BBS of every team during every single game.

You could put together a highlight film of guys hacking Yao, LeBron James, SHaq, Arenas all for no-calls, and vice versa, and you could go back and show the same film for Hakeem, etc. (maybe Jordan is the only exception as to a player who truly got "teflon" treatment - and Karla though in Karla's sense it was because he wsa such a dirty player they could never catch all of the crap he pulled).

It's just something that has to be dealt with, and dealt with by everybody.

If that is the case, how many times have TD, Lebron, KG, Shaq, etc fouled out this year? This is obviously a league that treats players differently based purely on who the players are.

Lebron is complaining about not getting enough calls, but how many fouls does he get called a game?

you could make a highlight film but yao ming's would be three times longer than anyone elses. it's not even close to just his fair share of unjust calls. it's ridicuous. i'm sure lebron has his own beef, and maybe he should go to the line more then he does but you don't think the refs let these star players also get away with more than anyone else? yao gets away with nothing.

And Shaq and LeBron fans are typing the exact same thing, right at this very moment.

So is there two people bumping Lebron everytime he catch the ball? Lebron shot a lot of outside shots, Yao gets bumped everytime he catches the ball.

82games.com did an adjusted study earlier this season (which I can't find unfortunately) but IIRC Yao was around the 10th most often fouled player in the league overall.

Sure, there are bad calls...but fact of the matter is Yao is foul prone.

He has bad judgment in distinguishing between when to get out of the way and when to go for the block/draw a charge. It's possible that with such a big body, he just can't get out of the way fast enough in some situations.

Overall, I commend his desire to play defense even when he's in bad position, but sometimes I think things would be better if he would let a few baskets go. Yao can more than make up for letting those "easy" buckets go by staying in the game longer and using his offensive prowess.

Gimme a break... does Lebron get called for an offensive foul when he tries to move laterally but some player literally rides him along the way to impede his progress and then flop, like Yao got called against Okur three days ago?

Samfisher, except deep down inside YOU know that Yao is judged especially badly. And no, I doubt Shaq fans are typing the same thing since Shaq gets to the line more than anyone else in the league. He's the standard for how many times a star should get to the line if there were such a thing. Fact of the matter is that Yao gets shoved/hacked/pushed so much that people have gotten used to it but it doesn't mean that Rockets fans should let it continue. Case in point being that 6th foul on him during the sonics game. But for some reason you have an interest in downplaying what everyone here and the Rockets coaches etc know already. Try not to be so blatantly biased all the time.

    Sam,

Last time I checked Yao is a member of the Houston rocket team. As a fan of the rockets shouldn't you try to be at least unbiased toward Yao? What is it that he does make you dislike him so much anyway, remember he is not a neocon. :D
