Should Yao be pulled out at the end of game for defensive purpose?

Personally, I totally don't get it here.

Yao has his defensive weakness on premiter rotation, but he protects the basket better than anyone else in this team. According to data I see, his defensive contribution is way underrated. I understand that you use Hayes to replace Scola or Landry, or use Battier to replace any guard. But Yao's function on defense is quite unique.

For Yao, there are a few matchups that it is understandable you pull him out for defensive purpose. For example, there is a good shooting big guy in a hot night. But I do think in most of nights it is not a good idea to do so if there is enough time for opponents to attack the basket.

My impression is that Adelman's defensive strategy to pullout Yao usually doesn't work. The opponents keep attacking the basket and get the easy points. My guess is that Adelman is too worried about 3 point shooting at the end of game, but most of time I think 3 point shooting is not an efficient way to score comparing to layups or tip-ins.

    What do you think?

Depends on the situation. For pick and roll situations where you know the offense is going to shoot a 3, yeah, pull him out. If the other team is looking to penetrate Yao can obviously change shots with his height.

That was some horrible defense at the end. I had money on Houston -7 and they were up 16.

Oh well, at least we won!!

Yao's defense is above average but it's far from great. the reason people underrate his defense is because he alters shots more than he blocks them.

If the other team is going to run a PnR with their big, or they're going small, then subbing in Chuck makes sense. But Yao gives them better defensive rebounding at the basket. If it's important to get a stop and secure the defensive board (e.g. down by 1 with about 30 seconds left), then you probably want to keep Yao in the game. If its a final possession, and they're probably only going to get one good shot off any ways, then usually Chuck is the better option.

if the other team is going to jack up 3s, leave yao on the bench, put hayes in so everyone on the court can switch and contest on teh primieter..

but if they are going for layups, i thik it's better with yao gaurding the basket.

rebounding is more important at the end of game.

am I the only one here who doesn't think Adelman is a moron for wanting his best free throw shooter on the floor when the Bulls were fouling?

Technically that's Brooks. But Adelman was swapping Yao in and out of the game with Hayes for defensive/offensive possessions.

I think it's not Yao's problem, depending on the situation of that time. Adelman can make a good decision who shuld remain on the floor.
