INDIANAPOLIS -- Jamaal Tinsley will remain on the Pacers roster while the team tries to trade him, but the guard won't practice with Indiana when it opens training camp Tuesday.

The team will not buy out Tinsley's contract, Pacers president Larry Bird said Friday.

"He will stay wherever he's at until we get something done. Jamaal knows that, his agent knows it and we know it," Bird said. "Nothing has changed from what we said at the beginning of the year.

"We're going to try to get the best deal for us. If it drags on a little bit, then that's what it's got to be."

The Pacers made their intentions clear to Tinsley this summer when they removed the nameplate from his locker at Conseco Fieldhouse and sent his belongings to him in Atlanta.

Tinsley has been with the Pacers since before the 2001-02 season, but has been hampered by injuries and off-court legal problems in recent years. He played in just 39 games last season, the fewest in his seven-year NBA career. In March, charges in connection with a bar fight were dropped against Tinsley and teammate Marquis Daniels, who agreed to perform 32 hours of community service.

Daniels is still with the Pacers but Tinsley became expendable in a roster shake-up that brought in seven new players over the summer.

"Right now we're discussing with some teams and we've been discussing with his agent throughout," Bird said. "And when it comes down to it, I really like Jamaal as a person, I think it's better for us to go in a different direction."

The new players include point guards T.J. Ford, acquired as part of a trade with Toronto for Jermaine O'Neal, and Jarrett Jack, who came as part of a trade with Portland for Ike Diogu.

Also, forward Austin Croshere, who was drafted by Bird in the first round in 1997 and spent his first nine seasons with the Pacers, has been invited to training camp. Croshere played for Dallas and Golden State the past two years.

I dont know about you guys but this wouldnt be a bad move if could get him for rafer and luther. we could unload some trash in luther and get an upgrade at point guard. the cons of course are tinsley's past and work ethic. he's also injury prone but i still remember him abusing rafer. he would call for the ball in the post and run back down the court smirking after scoring on him at will. i think we have enough veterans to balance out knuckle heads like artest and tinsley. what do you all think? i think it's debatable.

yea cause what we need is another injury-prone point guard.. not to mention that he gets in trouble with the law occasionally..

If you think Rafer struggles from the perimeter, Tinsley makes Rafer look like Jose Calderon.

people are wondering that if this year will ron artest be a locker room cancer. its almost a guarantee that tinsley would be a cancer on this team if he came here.

wasn't he with Ron when the Detroit brawl happened? oh great, let's bring in JO and Jackson. hm... if we give them Head plus expiring contract, i would do it. he is a good passer after all. it's not like we need him to score.

Jamal's salary in the next 3 years:

    2008/09 - $6,750,000

    2009/10 - $7,200,000

No to Tinsley, no to Deiner either. The guy is a marginal NBA player.

Don't need All Stars on the bench. The Rockets have a need for a backup PG capable of limiting turnovers (4th in the league in Assist to Turnover ratio) and can hit 3s that's Diener.

i guess im a rafer hater, we seem to have a problem at the point. not to say tinsley is the answer but i think he would be a minor upgrade. we shouldnt blame rafer but i dont think it has worked out with him running the show. we can all say he runs the team better than anyone else but has anyone else gotten a fair shot? they let an injured steve run the show for three games last season and he was thrown under the bus my tmac. it's like having bush in office for eight years. it might be time for a change now just to see what happens.

just to mention career stats for those who think rafer is much better...

    rafer:
    10ppg 5 ast 3 rbds fg 39% 3pt 36% FT 73% TO 1.8 stl 1.2

    tinsley:
    10ppg 7 ast 3.4 rbds fg 40% 3pt 31% FT 71% TO 2.9 stl 1.7

it's a wash to me with a slight edge to tinsley as a play maker with rafer being the better (can i say it?) shooter and ball handler. they both have been pretty mediocre in the playoffs. rafer obviously is more durable but tinsley is much stronger.

Trading Rafer for Tinsley ? :D hahahahahahahaha.......

then why not trade tmac for marbury?

It's a proposal that even agentzero can't think of. :D

As a result, you are to take agentzero's fame and become the new humour-maker of our forum.

Tinsley is a great PG, but only when healthy.

If you had Tinsley for 24 minutes a game, you could do much worse; but his salary wouldn't justify it.

I wouldn't mind getting Brandon Rush in such a deal, but Tinsley would be too high a cost.

I agree that we dont need all-stars but I find it hard to believe that Deiner would be considered a solid bench player. Opposing team's guards would eat him alive. Opposing team's backups would eat him alive.

Our PG's are already the weakest position on the floor and it would be counter-intuitive to add a slow, unatheltic guard to an already poor collection. He also shot 31% from 3-point last year which is below the league's average.
