Clips make qualifying offer to Jaric

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Los Angeles Clippers made a qualifying offer to guard Marko Jaric on Monday, making the three-year NBA veteran a restricted free agent.

By making that move, the Clippers have the right to match any offer made by other teams for the 26-year-old from Serbia-Montenegro.

Jaric, the 30th overall selection in the 2000 NBA draft, averaged 9.9 points, 6.1 assists and 3.2 rebounds in 50 games last season. He has averaged 8.5 points, 4.5 assists and 2.9 rebounds in three years with the Clippers.

Teams can begin negotiating with free agents Friday, and once a new six-year collective bargaining agreement is ratified, they will be able to sign them starting July 22. Qualifying offers had to be made by Thursday to make eligible players restricted free agents.

Since we drafted a combo PG/SG there is little chance we will pursue another one. Especially a Restricted one. PF will be the focus from here on.

I disagree, there's currently talk about picking up Antonio Daniels.

There might be talks about AD but for a fact the number 1 priority is the Power Forward posistion.

With Charlie Ward, Bob Sura, Luther Head, and Moochie Norris already on the roster I don't see them going after any point guards unless they are able to move a couple of these players.

No Ward, and no Norris this year. I believe Jaric is better passer than Sura, Head, and MJ.

We can still trade for a PF if we sign a PG. I wouldn't discount the possibility that the Rockets go after yet another guard. Besides, it's not like Ward and Norris would play. And Head and Span are rookies.

What do you mean no Ward and no Norris this year? They're still under contract. As to how I feel about Jaric, I might would be interested were he not so injury prone. I just can't see the Rockets saying "I love what Bob Sura gave us at the point when he was healthy, but he's too injury prone to be reliable. Maybe we should look into Marco "I play 20 games a season' Jaric."

You can disagree all you want. There is no way the Rockets are going to use the MLE to sign another combo guard as long as Swift, SAR, Marshall, Walker, Andersen and possibly LaFrentz and Webber are all UNrestricted.

Jaric probly wouldn't even be able to crack minutes on this team as a backup.

I could understand the hype about him when he first came over, but he hasn't really done anything in his NBA career so far to be excited about.

    Clippers' Jaric weighs options

    By Daily News Wire Services

With his planned vacation to Europe coming up in three days, Clippers guard Marko Jaric does not have a fix yet on where he will be playing this coming season.
However, Jaric's agent, Bill Duffy, said late Thursday night that he expected something to be decided in the next few weeks.

At least seven teams have expressed interest in Jaric. However, Jaric is a restricted free agent, which means the Clippers can match any offer he receives. Jaric visited Denver on Monday and met with Cleveland on Tuesday and Wednesday. Neither team made an offer.

Although Duffy would not divulge how much Jaric is seeking, it possibly could be more than the mid-level exception which will be about $5 million per year, once the new collective-bargaining agreement is ratified.

The mid-level exception is all that Denver, Minnesota, Portland and the Lakers have to offer. But Cleveland has the ability to free up more money with a little creativity. Atlanta also would have a bigger stash if their five-year, $70 million offer sheet on guard Joe Johnson is matched by the Phoenix Suns.

Duffy would prefer to do a sign and trade because that would mean Jaric could get a six-year deal and be eligible for annual raises of 10 percent, rather than 8 percent. However, the Clippers reportedly are not interested in a sign and trade and plan to match any offer sheet, up to a certain point.

"They have to be presented with something that's appealing to them," Duffy said. "It's a matter of the Clippers being receptive to an offer made to them."

Duffy also represents unrestricted free-agent center Zeljko Rebraca, who played a solid role for the Clippers last season, especially over the final two months. The Clippers expressed that they wanted to keep Rebraca, and Duffy said an agreement is close to being made with the Clippers for a three-year deal.

Agreement done: The NBA's new collective bargaining agreement was finally completed and signed early this morning in New York, clearing the way for free agent signings to begin Tuesday.

Lawyers for the league and the players' union had been working nearly around the clock for the past several days on drafting the documents for the six-year agreement, which was made to in principle more than a month ago.

League attorneys will spend the next few days reviewing the agreement with teams, and signings will begin at noon EDT on Tuesday.

The salary cap will be set at $49.5 million, an increase of $5.63 million from last season.

For the first time, teams will know before the season begins what the luxury tax threshold will be -- $61.7 million. Teams with payrolls over that will have to pay a dollar-for-dollar tax on the amount of their payroll that exceeds the $61.7 million.

No deal: First-round draft pick Fran Vazquez has decided to remain in Europe instead of joining the Orlando Magic this season.

The 6-foot-10 power forward from Spain was the 11th pick in the June draft and the first European player selected. He was expected to play right away for the Magic.

"I've said no because I was afraid to adapt to the American way of life and of not giving the level they have asked," Vazquez told the Spanish newspaper Malaga Hoy. "I'm not a coward, but I prefer to stay in Spain, progress, and who knows? Maybe jump to the NBA in a few years."

The Magic knew Vazquez had a $650,000 buyout clause in his European contract when they drafted him, but they insisted it wouldn't be a problem.

"Yes, we're a little surprised," Magic co-general manager Dave Twardzik said. "The message we've been getting all along - before the draft, after the draft - was that he was excited about playing here. He said it was his dream to play in the NBA."

Under the already agreed-upon salary scale, Vazquez was slated to sign a guaranteed contract worth more than $5 million over three years.

The Magic have not spoken to Vazquez, only to his European agent, Jose Cobelo.

Even though Vazquez said he won't join the Magic this season, the team will retain his NBA rights indefinitely.

McInnis to Nets: Free-agent guard Jeff McInnis has reached a one-year deal with an option for a second year with the New Jersey Nets, agent Steve Kauffman said.

The 6-foot-4 McInnis can play both point guard, as a backup to Jason Kidd, and shooting guard. He averaged 12.8 points for the Cavaliers last season.

The McInnis deal comes about a week after the Nets reached agreements with two other free agents, forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim and forward Clifford Robinson. The Nets also signed their first-round pick, Antoine Wright, a 6-7 guard.

Meet and greet: Free-agent forward Antoine Walker met this week with Miami Heat president Pat Riley, though no contract offer was made.

"It was a chance for them to spend some time together," agent Mark Bartelstein said. "They had never really spoken at length. They had a really good meeting."

Walker, a three-time All-Star, averaged 19.1 points and nine rebounds last season for Atlanta and Boston.

I'd be amazed if JVG approved a deal for Jaric. Van Gumby likes players who play solid defense, or have the skillset to be taught solid defense. Jaric not only doesn't play good D, but he's pretty slow and clumsy to be out guarding anyone on the perimeter in JVG's system.

Even if he could learn the defensive system, he'd be our weak link on D. His rotation is slower than the earth's.

    Just say NO to Jaric.

he is too injury prone for JVG to have any interest.

Yes, we should try everything to get a sign and trade for Jaric done. He is a very tall guard with good handles and a good 3-point shot who can play three positions.
