I am leaning toward yes and it should be almost fully staffed, give everyone about 3 weeks Vaca in August September and have kids mainly work on credit recovery or classes they have failed.

Can do a hybrid of online and classroom.

I think with how a lot of kids are failing this will allow kids to catch up.

Teachers will need to be compensated adequately.

    Why not?

I know we are about a 30 to 40% failure rate of 2 consecutive 6 weeks some in core classes and we have been open the entire time.

Something is gonna have to be done to keep kids on a graduation track.

I think it is very reasonable to close the schools and stop the virus. Save lives. Support the parents financially on a scale like all the other advanced countries. Also very reasonable to have mandatory summer school with reasonable vacations to catch up. We should also pay the teachers overtime rates for the summer and ask for volunteers.

If you watch Fox, as I do now about 15 minutes per day, they of course blame everything on the teacher's unions, which they want to destroy like all other unions.
They are always looking for a way to divide folks-- parents vs teachers or whatever.
Understandably everything is about "cancel culture" or kids vs teachers and as little mention as possible of their and the GOP role in the assault on the Capitol. Very little on the impeachment.

I feel like we would need to confirm that insufficient time in school is the reason for failure. If so, then adding more time in school could be a remedy. But I've not heard any arguments that the problem with our schooling system is that it doesn't take up a big enough portion of kids' lives.

    Huh?

Does not matter if its insufficient time or not its about the failure rate and this is not a permanent thing.

Just to get kids back on track leading to the new school year.

Lazy teachers would never support losing their 4 months of vacation.

No. Many kids haven't had a real "vacation" since March last year. They also need a mental break.

I'd agree with most in here by saying no, I'm of the mindset that workload needs to be reduced in general, schools should start later so kids can get more sleep, scrap detentions, longer recess for kids, PE or some sort of physical activity class should be a daily requirement for both middle/high school of all grades, and homework should be reduced by a great extent.

children/teens need time to be kids, they need a defined separation in the school/life balance.

I understand summer school is a setting that devotes more individual attention and time to students who are struggling which is important, but I think in-school programs are the better route.

Why not just extend the school year to help get them back on the right track.

All of those are offered now.

And hardly any homework is required in today's curriculum.

I don't know what you think school is currently but its hardly boot camp and is even easier since covid.

School takes up maybe 6 hours a day for students currently and that's included for them being kids.

I think they should have to attend another 6 weeks at the most.

That's even longer than regular summer school.

    Was thinking between 3-5 weeks.

No, they will ultimately just be passed or excused.
