Some think Teens should have all the rights of Adulthood I have talked to folx about various things and the answers make me question this Age of Adulthood 1. R Kelly - alledgedly was getting it on with a 13 yr old . . .and folx have said . . .SHE KNEW WHAT SHE WAS DOING 2. The Female Teachers getting it on with the teenage boys. . . folx take the stance that the boys enjoy it. . no harm no foul 3. Teenagers can get abortions without parental consent or knowledge 4. Teens should be able to get the death penalty [though it is outlawed now] My point is. . .we seem like we feel teenagers have the Right, Experience and privileged to make the decisions etc Why not lower the Age of Consent/Adulthood/vote .. the whole nine. I think this is a great thread. We've seen plenty of instances here of people not thinking the age of majority was all that important. But 18 as the threshold of adulthood is graven into the national psyche such that people don't question even when it is obvious they don't agree with all its applications. It's probably a useful exercise to see if 18 is really where we want it to be at. I could tolerate a little movement one way or another on the age at which one is an adult, but I think 18 is actually a very good place to put it. But then, I'm the one always criticizing the people congratulating the kid for getting it on with teacher.
How can we lower the age any younger when the average age of sons and daughters moving out of their parents homes is getting higher?
science seems to be indicating otherwise. seems like i've read lots of articles recently about how the brain isn't fully developed, particularly in areas of reason or rationality, before a certain age. i believe the supreme court even used that in their consideration on the execution of juveniles issue.

Are you trying to excuse R Kelly's despicable act? The girl was THIRTEEN YEARS OLD. I don't know who these 'folx' are that say she knew what she was doing, but I can tell you that when most girls are 13 years old, they are not being video taped during sex acts. Get real, River.
Give RR a break. He never said that what happened with that incident was right, or should be legal. He just quoted it as an example of something that happened... and, apparently, some people (!!) were OK with it. Whoever was needs to be institutionalized, IMO, but some would find anything OK. I don't think anyone younger than I am should be considered mature enough to make important decisions. Hell, if I qualify than it is by the slimmest of margins.

I would be for that to but the biggest problem would be with alcohol because it has been 21 for so long but then you introduce a whole new sector of people that can get it, some that are still in high school with younger friends but hey I remember waiting outside liquor stores when I was underage and people would have no problem buying me and my friends whatever was on our list.

Immaturity. I'm not saying that when people turn 21 they act any maturer than 18 year olds but it seems to me that when younger people drink they have to try and prove themselves. They drink way too much, try to drive when they drink because they think can do it, and they don't listen when somebody older tries to help them out. These things can be seen in adults obviously too but I tend to see them a lot more in underage drinkers. Voting, guns, war I'm sure the same thing applies. I remember hearing people in high school say stuff like they just go flip the switches when they vote it as a joke. Younger people are definitely not safer when carrying guns, during the hunting season this year the two people that were shot in my region were either being looked after by somebody under 21 or were under 21 themselves, a 10 year old boy was killed because the person looking after him didn't tell him to keep his gun pointed correctly and it ended up discharging into the young boy's chest, the other young man was climbing into a tree stand and pulled the gun with a rope that broke and it discharged into him too, luckily not killing him though. I have never been in war but I am willing to bet some of them have showed a lack of common sense during wartime but I am not sure because I have never been in that situation and hope to never be. Then again, everything I mentioned above adults do too sometimes. I am not arguing with you because I agree that the drinking age should be lowered. I believe I saw a study in a college class about other countries around the world who do not nearly have the problem we do when it comes to the 18-20 year old age group drinking. A lot of these kids do it just because it is wrong and they think it make them look cool. I live in a dry county also and the fight to make it wet has been a venomous one and if people feel this way about alcohol here and many other places as I know they do and parents with children in high school not wanting their kids or their kid's peers accessing alcohol then lowering the drinking age will never be a real possibility.
Raise the driving age to 18, lower the drinking age to 18. Look 18 is the same age you are an adult, can vote, be executed, whatever. Just make everything uniform. The 5 year lag between drinking & driving creates an extra bit of "forbidden fruit" quality to alcohol I think and makes it even more attractive than it otherwise would be.
See, I think that it all should be raised to 21. I don't remeber much of being 18, but I'm pretty sure I wasn't mature enough to be doing much of anything.
