And leave it at that. I saw a program last night about the incredible 'observable' universe and it got me thinking again about how infinite the possibilities are beyond all we can see and touch...and where does it all end? It has to end at something. I'm an atheist, and I declare my god as the universe. We all need to believe in something. Why bother defining which is the correct god to believe in - just bathe in the wonder of the universe...
I'm in.....nothing made up by man.....or stories told to make up what God is, to give us something to argue about and kill each other. I like your take better. DD
Personally, I'm the kind of guy who doesn't bother wondering about stuff that doesn't affect me. Your version of God has absolutely zero impact on my life or potential afterlife. So it's kind of pointless to believe or disbelieve its existence. A God has to show his wrath and punish us mere mortals, in order for people to take him seriously.
You're just doing the same thing that people have done for thousands of years, using god to explain the unknown. One day we'll know enough about the universe that the concept of god will be nothing more than Christian mythology.
I agree, and I think you may of missed my point. Immerse oneself in the wonder of the untold universe, forget arguing about who made it, or even what made it. I am at peace with that.
The question is how do you know that which is true from that which is "made up by man?" You don't. You do not know which of the prophets from the major religious texts were correct and which were not. That is why it is called faith and not called science.
The universe may be infinitively larger and infinitely smaller than our limited means of perception can ever know. What we see as the big bang universe might look like just another constellation among billions if you could expand your perception enough. Subatomic structures may appear as big bang universes if you could shrink your perspective enough. You, your life, life on Earth may be totally insignificant if you back out your perception enough but the fact is, we live in this human scale. Our perception is human-centric, therefore, you, your life, life on Earth are of the ultimate importance, to you. There seems no reason to formalize this as a belief or anything but I would like the people that exist on this planet to accept that this existence is of prime importance and quit deferring to the afterlife.
You're still choosing to believe something. I guess thats better than Nihilism. Say what you want about the tenets of National Socialism, at least its an ethos.
Have you ever heard that saying about people having a God shaped hole? Sometimes I think God has a man shaped hole.
I find it r****ded that some people actually think that there are people who understand gods intent better than another person. Religious leaders like the pope, evangelists, and the Dali Llama are just power hungry, attention whores.
Dalai Lama? Thats a bit of a blanket statement. Everyone wants attention and power in some form or another. Some less than others. Some try and conceal it under religious or industrial reasons.
"We all need to believe in something"...true, but for many people, it stops with humanity. Belief in a higher being is good and all, but I don't think it should eclipse reality (humanness, the human struggle) in importance. I think Dubious said it better than I could.
