Assuming the worst possibly case happens on draft day where we are stuck at 9th and no way to trade out. The Top 8 goes Martin, Mihm, Swift, Fizer, Miller, Miles, Moiso, and DerMarr. My question now is do we go need like as in Collier or talent as in Stevenson? ------------------ Now that the NBA season is over, check out the premiere source for draft info. Draftsource.net
What about drafting Rush and using him as trade bait? ------------------ You can't have everything.Where would you put it?
I've always believed in drafting for talent. Especially with our willingness to make trades I would take the best available player (even if it's a SG or PG) then try to put a package together to get a quality post player. ------------------
Under that scenario, I'd have to guess that we'd take Peterson at #9. Stevenson is projected to go late first round. Selecting him at #9 would be a major reach. Same for Rush. ------------------ [This message has been edited by aelliott (edited May 05, 2000).]
Stevenson is projected right now as mid to late first round but more than likely, his stock will move up. Nothing against Mo Pete, but DeShawn has a far higher ceiling to his game and could become a far better player. Stevenson has the potential to be one of the top SGs in the NBA if he develops. It is rare that players coming out of HS have BOTH incredible athletic ability and a reasonably developed basketball game. Stevenson has the athletic ability of Larry Hughes and has an outside to complement that. By the time the draft actually occurs, I think Stevenson will probably move up into the late lottery. My thinking is a team like Orlando that is picking 13th overall will select him. Thus, if the worst case scenario happens as Rocketsfan suggested, Stevenson wouldnt be too big of a reach. If the scenario happens, the best players left would be Collier, Stevenson, Alexander, Richardson, Thomas, Pryzbilla, Peterson, etc. Out of that group I would personally go for talent in Stevenson even though it duplicates to a certain extent what the Rockets have. ------------------ Check out the Best Source for Draft Info Draftsource.net
Mmanal, We'll have to disagree on Stevenson. Currently Chris Monter, who's probably the #1 draft expert, has Stevenson ranked at #27. I can't see him moving up to the lottery. ------------------
Actually I think stevenson can go early. Alot of players stock will rise and fall by draft night. People thought Rashard Lewis would go from 10-15 and he ended up going early second round. If you want a FLYING ACTION MACHINE YOUNGSTER, then Stevenson is your guy. ------------------ President of the Moochie Norris FAN CLUB
I say draft for need... ... If the need is Chris Mihm... please, draft for talent. ------------------ NOTHING BUT .NET CLUTCHCITY.NET
Clutch, LOL! Oh man, my sentiments exactly. If we draft Mihm, I'm gonna just quit watching basketball altogether. ------------------ ? [This message has been edited by Dr of Dunk (edited May 05, 2000).]
Draft for talent. If close, go big. ------------------ "You've got 6 fouls, use them well" -Derrick Coleman
Please, please, please, please, please don't draft for need . Drafting for need is just OH SO useful 3 years down the road when you could have found a role player for that position through free agency, and the draft pick was a complete bust, and spends his time on the bench and scoring 3 points per game in garbage time... ------------------ [This message has been edited by haven (edited May 05, 2000).]
Here is some interesting stuff I found on Stevenson. From an article on hoopstv.com: "DeShawn is a pretty good talent," said Gary Brokaw, Director of Player Personnel for the Orlando Magic. "He’s got good basketball skills and tremendous athletic ability which is a good combination. From fresnobee.com: "Orlando, stocked with three picks among the first 15 in the draft, clearly has a keen interest in Stevenson. The 6-foot 5-inch, 210-pounder also said he has been told San Antonio, Houston, Portland and Sacramento are considering him." ------------------ Check out the Best Source for Draft Info Draftsource.net
I have a lottery positioning question. The worst case scenario is stated to be the #9 pick. If one of the lottery teams with a better record than Houston, (Denver, Boston, Dallas, Orlando), gets its ball chosen in the top three, how does Houston still get the #9 pick? If the Rockets and fans can hope to get lucky on the lottery day to move up, wouldn't that push other teams back a notch ? Mango ------------------ The Serious Police are watching Donate Blood
#9 is not the worst case scenario. Its possible though unlikely that three teams behind the Rockets get the top 3 picks. This would push the Rockets down to #12. ------------------ Check out the Best Source for Draft Info Draftsource.net
Mango -- You're right. Worst case scenario is not #9 -- it's only the most likely scenario. If Denver, Boston, Dallas or Orlando get into the Top 3 and the Rockets do not, then they fall to 10... 2 get up there, then #11... ------------------ NOTHING BUT .NET CLUTCHCITY.NET
