Should the FBI really be baiting sad-sack homegrown terrorists?

I should note that the quote from Jon Sherman in the second-to-last paragraph is very misleading. The FBI has a lot of the same operations in militia groups, and the Hutaree militia arrests were similarly borderline entrapment.

To the point of the article: Is this making us safer? Is it really getting terrorists off the streets, or just desperate people who might possibly be talked into terrorism with enough incentive. Is it crazy to suggest the possibility of success for one of these FBI-initiated terrorist plots? If one of the Newburgh Four would have went off script, and, say, burned the synagogue because he was worried about the bomb plot not succeeding, wouldn't we have to blame the FBI for initiating this?

Yeah, that was the first time I paid attention to this, and realized what a farce most terrorist plot arrests are. But apparently, it's been going on for at least 14 years.

It's been going on forever and reminds me of back in the 60/70's when the FBI was infiltrating the anti-war movement many of the meetings had more agents than bomb-throwers.

Many agents volunteered for the hippie chicks and a shot at free love.

Why's it misleading? The argument is that they put disproportionately more resources into it, not that similar operations don't exist.

    Another interesting case.

    Long article:

Basically, the FBI recruits a guy out of prison to be an informant for drug gangs, white supremist groups, and finally, a mosque. When he goes to the mosque, he's so inflammatory with calls for jihad that other worshipers called the police and even the FBI on him. He did find potential terrorists, but because of his behavior, any charges were dropped against them. Now he's gone public with what he did for the FBI, the Muslim leaders feel betrayed, and are less likely to work with law enforcement.
