    Yudhoyono's phone offer crashes

President Yudhoyono has worked hard to connect with the public.

The Indonesian president's mobile phone line has crashed after he gave out his number to the public at the weekend. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said he wanted people to feel free to call him with their problems.

But by Monday the line was dead after more than 3,000 calls had been made to the number, local media reported.

Mr Yudhoyono became Indonesia's first directly elected president last year, and has cultivated the image of an approachable leader.

"If you think [we] don't care, never come to you and your problems are left unsettled, my cellular phone is active 24 hours a day," he reportedly told a gathering of farmers on Saturday afternoon.

He then gave out his number - 0811109949 - and the media started broadcasting it nationwide. It crashed soon afterwards.

Presidential spokesman Andi Mallarangeng said messages varied from simply inquiring after Mr Yudhoyono, to giving him information about local situations.

"The president did not expect such an incredible response and interest from the public," he said.

He said that five more phone lines were needed, but a new computer system would have to be installed first.

A resident of South Jakarta suggested that an email address for the president would be more efficient.

Didn't Bono try to call President Bush (Sr.) from every concert on the Zoo TV tour? Of course he got the White House operator and never got through but he tried.

And, you could argue, that Bill Clinton was VERY aproachable if you the right intern... I mean person... ;)

    WHO?!!

    :D

Man, It is good to see though that a democratic leader gives a **** every once in a while, because lord knows our leaders try their best to isolate themselves from the common people. Indonesia is a country of nearly 220 million people, I am surprised he only got 3000 calls

Oh, you are right. I completely forgot about that, although it was mentioned in the article  He needs a more reliable service provider I guess...

I am thinking about making an international call to his cell phone, just for the heck of it! I would like to see if I will actually get through, may be ask him if there are any good Indonesian restaurants in Houston or something :p
