Should I get the new Black Crowes, and a question for Jeff

I would like to know if the new Black Crowes album is worth purchasing (I already know BK's answer). To this point, I would consider myself a casual fan (even though I own all of their albums). I wasn't too keen on their last record, "By Your Side" (thought it sounded forced), and my two favorites of theirs are "Southern Harmony and Musical Companion", and, oddly enough, "3 Snakes and One Charm". I would normally have already bought their new album, but due to a life-changing event, have had to curtail my CD-buying. I need to try to only hit the sho' things now!

Also, for Jeff, I'm in the process of downloading an entire album via one of those Napster clones. The reason I'm doing this, and it's the only reason, is that the album is only available via import. As you probably know, import prices are pretty steep. Now, I actually have many of this band's other albums at those import prices, but as I mentioned above, due to a life-changing event, I need to cut back on my music purchases. The most important point, though, is that if this album were available domestically, I would already own it. I'm looking to you for some ethical guidance here. So, am I a horrible person?

That's a tough call. Frankly, I'd probably download it as well. Imports are not only tough to come by but, like you said, really expensive.

I'd try Ebay, personally, first to see if I could get it cheaply, but, if not, I probably wouldn't hesitate to download it if I really wanted it.

You are not a horrible person. To be honest, I'm struggling with the download thing too and here's why...

I've found lately that I've gotten the opportunity to produce a number of musicians in Houston. This is great but, because I am really just getting going with this, I'm not getting paid much. Eventually, I will, but one of the essential elements of production is hearing what is out on CD and getting ideas from that. Because I don't have much cash flow, I can't really afford a bunch of new CD's.

If I could, I'd probably be buying 10 or 15 a WEEK, but that is out of the question. So, I've found myself contemplating downloading some for the purposes of listening for production and then erasing them when I'm done. It's hard not to when thhe stuff is available and you need/want it. Ugh!

I haven't heard too much of the new album but I wasn't too keen on what I did. Sounded too much like their last effort.

I think you're money would be better spent on the STP cd. [IMG]

New video was a little different. I didn't like the song, and the video, although somewhat visually interesting, didn't seem to tell me anything.

No one should ever buy a Black Crowes CD.

No one should ever read a Hobbs post.

Freak: yes, buy the album. It's not at all like By Your Side, which is my least-favorite Crowes album (it had its moments, like "Horsehead" and "Virtue and Vice", but it did sound forced).

The Crowes switched labels before making Lions. This might not seem like a big deal, but frankly, I think they were trying too hard to please the label on BYS. They allowed themselves to be pigeonholed-- "You're the most rock-n-roll rock-n-roll band in the world, now go make a record that proves it!"-- and BYS suffered as a result.

On Lions, I think the band was more willing to indulge its eclectic side again. You've got songs like "Midnight From the Inside Out", which is somewhat Zeppelin-esque (riff-oriented, stomping drum beat). You've got "Ozone Mama" and "Young Man Old Man", which are more funk-oriented. You've got "Greasy Grass River" and "Soul Singing", which are just pure Crowes (you'll know what I mean when you hear it).

And of course you've got "Losing My Mind" and "Lay It All On Me", which are utter ****.

So it's a mixed bag. I love it, weak spots and all.

Jeff -- thanks. Like I said, I would definitely buy the album if it were made available domestically. Downloading is such a pain for me though, that I'll probably never get around to getting more than a few of the songs, plus the quality isn't as good.

Stone Cold -- I used to like STP pretty well, but not so much now. I have this rule where if too many people start to like a band, I can't like them. [IMG]

RM95 -- thanks for the analysis. [IMG]

BK -- thanks for the review. The album sounds intriguing...I'll add it to my (short) list.
