I am considering getting a sling box, and allowing people on here to access it to view the Rockets games if they are out of town. Does anyone know how many connections the Sling box can handle? I would hate to get one, and when I am traveling be locked out because so many others are using it. I don't mind sharing, but want to make sure I can access it myself when needed. Thanks, DD
I'm going to assume just one. And even if it could handle more than one, your upload could MAYBE handle 2 connections....unless they have some super awesome codec that can shrink the streams to the bitrate of an audio broadcast....which even then could only probably handle up to 15 connections.
One connection only, DD. Anyone used one? I'm curious about picture size/quality. Thinking about getting one to put in a friend's place when I leave the country.
They are nice, since it's a small box. Before I got one, I used http://www.orb.com to broadcast video. but I got one for around $140 from Newegg.com. They are nice little gadets. The quality is good. I'm satisfied, ofcourse I'm not the one using it. It just sits here so my father can watch off it.
DD, which one are you considering to get? I have the SLINGBOX TUNER. There's two other versions. (AV, PRO)
ok as far as i know about sling box. someone correct me. you plug it into the cable box, then the hi-speed internet and access it online. i have some questions for those who already own one. a) does it slow down the internet connection for that router b) can you watch cable on the tv and access it online. watch in simultanously. im thinking about using my friends cable and accessing the slingbox at my house through internet. advice? help?
Yes. It acts as a separate tuner, so you can watch one channel on TV and another via the slingbox. You can also access DVR'd programming remotely. This is all according to their website, as I've never used one.
Can it be plugged into a Tivo to alow remote tivo access??? do you have the ability to control your tivo via the remote GUI on your computer?
It says it can......and there are videos showing the CEO in Tokyo doing it and watching the Daily show from his DVR/TIVO unit in San Mateo. I think I am going to get the PRO one...... DD
Yes, I have it controlling my DirecTivo. I use it all the time even. Mostly from home even. I watch TV from my home office while I work.
It uses one of my company (TI's) chips and it is pretty darn sweet when used in conjunction with a TiVo box.
I love my Slingbox .. have it installed at my parents house in Houston. My pic quality is average, but that is because my parents upload is not that great. If you can get a good upload connection, it will look really good. Definitely can only have 1 connection at a time. If you want to make sure only you would be able to use it if you go out of town or something, I would just change the password on it before you leave so you would be the only one to connect to it.
By the way, it is possible to have more than 1 computer connect to a slingbox, it just takes a little work. There are 3 ways that I've seen. 1. Find illegal software online that does it. It's out there, and I've seen it. 2. Alternatively, you have two computers connect to a proxy server and then have the slingbox stream to the proxy. This also is the most efficient in terms of bandwith because it streams directly to the proxy, and the proxy splits it up into both computers. I believe slingplayer has built in options regarding proxys and a friend of mine says that he has done this before. I know some programming and some other dynamics go into this and its actually a more complicated than it sounds but that's the jist of it. I think this is what streamtvnow does. They give you an .m3u file which just consists of a text file that tells winamp to go to a specific proxy server that they have setup. 3. And this is the most common that I know of, is to use windows media encoder. I'm sure there are tutorials online as to how to do this. But from what I have heard, it actually isn't too hard to do. This is of course kind of hard because it directly taxes your bandwith, so you can only get a few people to directly connect to your computer without obliterating your bandwith.
Smeg, That would be great......you in Australia and SJC in Germany would help me out a lot. Generally, I am in Austin, but travel a bit. I will let you guys know, but I am pretty sure I am going to get it. DD
