This whole Augusta thing going on, now Jesse Jackson is getting involved, saying its "gender apartheid". OK, women aren't allowed to be members but they can play with their husbands, boyfriends, friends, business partners, acquaintances, neighbors, strangers who are members. This is common as with any country club in the world, you gotta be a member although all the members here are male. Does this bug you? Not me...of course I'm male. But still, aren't there all male, all female schools? What is a sorority or fraternity?
I saw on TV the other day that the womens group calling for changes to Augusta's membership rules actually dont allow men to join their organization. Its PC gone mad.
I'm not a feminist male or anything, but geez Hootie Johnson and his board are being the ultimate a**holes. What the hell does it hurt to compromise and let them play if they want to pay. I don't want the Masters becoming mixed gendered but if the women's tour wants to use it for one of their 4 major championships, why in the world should he block them. More money for them. I guess at least he is standing up for principle, but I sure hope he isn't married because he would be black and blue from all the beatings she would have given him over the years. Heck who knows, maybe some of the members wouldn't mind seeing some cute girls on the course. Not that is the only reason why they should open it up to all people. There are others. Bottom line: Make it a mixed private course, but keep it male only for the Masters or female only for an LPGA major. Is this really that hard? I thought the 60's and these good ole southern boy ways of thinking had gone out the window but I guess not. If Golf wants to keep screwing themselves in the a** so be it. First it was all the crap about Casey Martin and his cart, and now this. They really need to get over their good ol' boy attitudes fast, before this sport starts to lose some of its luster(some believe it never had any to begin with).
That seems to be a stupid policy, but now it would appear the women are somewhat crying over spilled milk. I don't agree with the policy, but I was unaware of that in my first post, so I think it somewhat legitimizes Johnson's actions.
The only reason that this is such a big deal is that Hootie went nuts on the Martha Burke in his first response to her letter. If he had just explained the situation calmly and discussed the issue (with no intent to give in), this would have been dead. Unfortunately, he chose to blast her for threatening him and said he wouldn't be coerced into anything blah blah blah. That's what made this news in the first place. The club has the right to do as they wish. The women's groups got energized by that response and now will do what they wish with boycotts or whatnot.
You saw wrong. The NWCO is an organzation consisting of a number of predominantly female organizations.
You gotta be kidding me. This is a joke. It is a private organization. It is not public. They can do what they want to do with their members. As oily said, what the hell is a fraternity and a sorority?
Do any of you oldtime Houston sports fans remember Astros pitcher Bob Knepper's history with the N.O.W.?
They can do what they want to do with their members. As oily said, what the hell is a fraternity and a sorority? I wouldn't have a problem with Black organizations protesting and calling attention to a frat that would not allow a black member.
Yup...he didn't want women calling balls and strikes. I always wanted them to have Bob Knepper Presents Ladies' Day at the Astrodome.
Lipstick feminist on the loose here! I can't believe that any of you think it's OK to stop women becoming members of that club. Go back over your posts and insert 'African-Americans' for 'women' and see how good it looks. Example: 'Black people can play with friends or husbands, they just can't become members'. Oh, well, *that's* OK then! No it bloody isn't! For the record, I think private clubs, generally, are r****ded. I think fraternities and sororities are r****ded, too. But if they exist, making them gender-specific for no readily apparent reason is discrimination, plain and simple. And if women can play golf as well as men, and can hit the ball as far (can they? Not really up on women's golf), then of course the Masters can become mixed-gendered. What difference would it make?
Well, more importantly, I remember him calling N.O.W. a "bunch of lesbians". Not that I agree, but you have to give Knep credit for having the balls to say such a thing.
Its a joke that this bulldike is trying to force Augusta to let a woman join. Hats off to Hootie for telling her where she can take her complaints. There are plenty of golf clubs in the US (one in Houston as a matter of fact...Lochinvar...at least it was still all males when I was living there) that dont allow women on the premesis, let alone join. At least women can play at Augusta.
So women should be grateful they get let in the door at all? Gee, that sure is magnanimous of you guys... Oh, and by the way, it is deeply stupid to assume that a) all feminists are lesbians or b) that being a lesbian, if she is, should make any difference at all to how her utterly valid criticisms are received. What the hell is this, 1972? Codell: yeah, it sure takes 'balls' to abuse feminists, because *no one* in public life ever does that, he was so goddamned groundbreaking... insert several eyerolls here. (Incidentally, NOW is a *very* mainstream feminist organisation, hardly radical in its demands at all.)
