So I just got off the phone with a recruiter about a job and dude sounded legit, came off very professional, everything was going well...then he says he needs the last 4 digits of my ss# and I told him I wasn't comfortable giving that out at the moment and said he couldn't process my file if I did so I told him that I would not be giving out the number at the time and hung up. Is it normal for the recruiter to ask for the last 4 digits?

I've never had a recruiter ask, but I've had to enter it on a an app.

Yeah I've entered on app before also but just go weary of giving it to someone I haven't even met face to face.

They make their money off of getting you hired. If you sound like you're qualified for whatever job they're trying to get you then they'd explain what they're doing and figure out a way for you to get them the information instead of hanging up.

I think you did the smart thing by not giving them the info. It sounds like a phishing tactic.

Given how many times your nonpublic information has probably already been stolen by Russian mobsters, giving it to this guy is probably harmless. Still, I applaud you for holding firm, because recruiters shouldn't be asking for it.

No, but I've had them ask on job applications before an interview. I always decline to give it to them until we get to the background check stage which is after the offer.

I give my SSN quite freely. No issues to date.

Just go with 555. If he asks for another digit say 5.

Seems odd for them to request that info after only speaking with you on the phone. We capture the last four of SS numbers when requesting references just in case it's needed for employment verifications. And typically that's after a face-to-face interview has been scheduled.

The "process your file" part definitely sounds fishy, IMO. That just doesn't sound like something that a recruiter or anyone in HR would say. "Process your application", "keep you in consideration", or something along those lines would be common lingo.

It very well may have been legit, but I definitely understand why you felt uneasy with sharing that information.
