Should a free agent take another free agent at his word?

How could a free agent blindly trust another free agent at his word?

Chicago Tribune's Sam Smith poses a good example...

    From Sam Smith's Chat....

Is there any way we can ask Wade why he hasn't already signed with the Heat if he's so "loyal?"

    Kenneth Wills

Sam: I have to believe we’ve heard the last from Wade for some time after his stupid remarks about loyalty last week. This is a good point, given Miami has offered him a max deal already that he declined to sign because he said he has to wait and see if the Heat add enough good players to make to worthwhile for him to return. So much for loyalty. And as loyalty goes, it sounds somewhat disloyal to ask fellow players to be disloyal to their franchises and leave to join you even though you haven’t decided yet whether you’ll be loyal enough to resign. And since Wade is holding out re-signing, why would anyone sign with the Heat before Wade does?

Three words for all these free agents... Elton "Bleeping" Brand....

NBA players are a close knit group and can trust each other with regard to FA decisions.

    Sincerely,

    Elton Brand

There are two organizations within the NBA. The Players' Association... and everyone else.

Hell no. When it comes down to it, everybody only has his own best interest at heart. Nothing else comes close.

I think Elton Brand botched his attempt at collusion. There isn't any intrinsic reason why FAs shouldn't be able to trust one another. If you have a team that wants to sign two max FAs, and you and your friend are max-worthy FAs that want to play for that team, how can you mess this up? What motivation could an FA have to stab the other FA in the back? And, if there is distrust about it, couldn't you arrange to have you and the other FA in the same room at the same time to put ink to paper simultaneously? This shouldn't be so hard.

Baron Davis left GS for the Clippers and thought he was going to play with his friend Elton Brand. Elton had other plans and Philly offered him the max and he left Davis alone in pergatory errrr the Clippers.

Brand opted out of the final year of his contract and became a free agent.

According to ESPN, sources have reported that Brand chose to opt out from his contract in order to provide Clippers with more payroll flexibility in hopes of strengthening their roster.

This came to fruition when Clippers landed Golden State Warriors star Baron Davis. Briefly, this gave Clippers' management and the media the reassurance that Brand would indeed resign with the team.

Bird has spoken against the best players bonding together instead of being rivals, like himself and Magic were. Saying he'da never gone over to Magic to try to be an ally with him, he PREFERRED the rivalry. Magic didnt take the rivalry as seriously as Bird.

I see it both ways. It could be a team for the ages having all the best players on one team. The 2000 era Lakers had the top 2-4 players in the league on their team. (Actually the Lakers always seem to have two top 10 players on their teams..)

Though keeping the talent separated keeps some parity in the league. There's already repeat champions WITHOUT multiple top 10 players on a team. So its really not necessary to clump them all on 1 squad really...

The Elton Brand case is an example of how that can fall through, but you have so lay some of the blame at Donald Sterling's feet. Brand had agreed on a max deal before Baron signed with the Clippers, and then Sterling started talking about less money once he started looking at the payroll. That's when Brand bolted for the 76ers. I can't say I blame him either. LeBron would be a fool to sign for that cursed franchise.

Here's audio of both Clipper GM Mike Dunleavy and Elton Brand's agent David Faulk giving both their sides of the free agent fall out...

Wade really didn't think things through when he spouted off like that.
