A rather large number of people close to me have had their lives turned into blurry garbage and I have no way to help them. How can a doctor, perscribe a drug to a teenager (who has legit anxiety problems) that wipes your short term memory? They have no chance of escaping it's effects, how can you take the correct dosage if you have no chance of remembering what you've taken? My best friend says she's been raped 6 times in 3 months... is this true? How the ^%#! would she know? When am I supposed to take my next one? What time did I take my last one?

    They are lost...

I tried it for myself... I took 1/4 of a bar ( 1/8th my friends daily dosage and I'm twice her size) watching the clock and 45 minutes later I blacked out completely... I figured I just passed out but I saw bizarre evidence that I had indeed been awake... NOTHING has ever wiped me out like that

I would like to hear from you guys if you personally know someone who has had their lives destroyed by this vile drug and the b*stard doctors who hand them out like candy

I would also like to hear if you know someone whom this drug has actually helped, because it will be the first time I've heard it.

I was at a party a few weeks go and two girls were popping these things. They didn't have a prescription, but apparently they're easy to get ahold of, because they ran out and went and got more in the middle of the night.

Xanax are a bit stronger than Valium, but do not generally cause short term memory issues. Ruhipnol is the biggest offender on short term memory loss and is commonly called the "date rape drug" for that reason.

As far as the dosing, Xanax patients build up a tolerance quite quickly which is most likely the reason that you passed out (or blacked out) like you did where others were able to function after ingesting.

Xanax is not evil, but I would agree that kids should not be prescribed barbiturates as a general rule.

It helps me. I have allergic reactions to food and an ulcer that triggers slight panic attacks. Xanax works wonders for me. I take the smallest dose possible and it just "brings me back" and really helps with the stomach pain. These pain killers I am on right now for my back make me dizzy and nervous, like I drank tons of coffee. It helps with that too. I thank god for the drug. I do my best not to take a lot, and I never take more than 5mg at once. The dose you took (10mg) wouldn't effect me like it did you at all.

I have always had short term memory problems, so I can't tell if it has affected it or not. I have always had short term memory problems, so I can't tell if it has affected it or not.

If used correctly, no it isn't evil, but this drug has a very high propensity for abuse and adiction. It has become very very popular as a party drug and mixing it with alchohol will F you up big time. It is not very hard to get a hold of either and will sell for $2-5 (street) a pill, depending on the dose

I have personally seen 4 people in my life become adicted to Xanax and the withdraw from it is pretty scary.

You literally feel like you are going crazy! my friends told me they felt like they had no control over their thoughts, many reported sucide feelings. You have to ween yourself off of it, otherwise the withdraw is even worse

It should NEVER be used for more than 2 weeks in a row (on a daily basis). period. Any doctor that prescribes it to you and tells you to take it everyday for more than 2 weeks should be viewed with skepitism

Xanax is 1/1000th the potency of Rohypnol and 1/1000th as damaging which is why it's illegal (in the US.) Xanax is basically a cop-out prescription replacement for Valium. Valium got kind-of a bad wrap in the 1980's (mostly for political reasons) and Xanax was a convenient replacement. Valium is actually a much safer (and to some extent more "natural") drug.
that being said, i also feel that Xanax is NOT evil. none of these drugs should be prescribed to teenagers, period. IMO, Ritalin is even worse. the teenage bio-psyche is not yet fully developed and can become dependent much more easily on an "external" chemical "fix" for a (potentially) biological problem. almost always, there's a better solution.
    sorry for the rant.

Horrible, horrible drug. Has personally caused two accidents. A friend of mine was severly addicted and went completly nuts, tried suicide three times and nearly died many more times unintintionaly??. The people at the detox center he checked in to said that for nearly one and a half weeks he was banging off the walls in fits of terror and confusion. He does not remember these few weeks but he says that they were not bad.

Just FYI, Xanax is a benzo, not barbituate. Barbituates like Phenobarbitol and the like aren't really prescribed much anymore, and benzo's (xanax, valium, klonopin) are similar but safer and much more common in recent years.

Xanax is very commonly used for recreational purposes these days, and is very easy to get ahold of. Hell, you can order it over the internet if you just know the right places to look. I've had many personal experiences with xanax and used to be really into it. Not something I'm really proud of, but I do have experience on the subject. It can be a very relaxing experience and is not an evil drug when used in moderation. It does have a very high potential for mental addiction though, and benzo withdrawls are some of the worst there are. Speaking personally, it does not cause severe short term memory loss, and in low (reccomended) doses it usually does not cause any. When mixed with alcohol, yeah it can definetly happen. Like any other drug, it can have adverse reactions if you are not responsible in using it. It's basically impossible to overdose on xanax alone....

I'm not sure where you got that information, but it is certainly false. There is no way Rohypnol is 1000x stronger than xanax. All drugs, even drugs in the same class such as benzo's, can have very different reactions depending on the person that is taking them. Personally xanax affects me a lot more than rohypnol ever did, but it is different for everyone. I've heard many people say that Halcion is the strongest of all.....I was given Halcion by my dentist about a year ago to ease anxiety before a root canal, and it didn't even phase me.

As for it being prescribed to teenagers, no, I definetly don't think that is a good idea. It is a very recreational drug, and giving teenagers easy access to something like that is just asking for trouble. I do know many adults that have taken Xanax though and it has made a huge positive difference in their lives, and made facing severe cases of anxiety easier. In all cases though, I think drugs in this class should be prescribed as a last resort. I think it is common practice for most doctors these days to attempt to treat the problem with an SSRI, such as Paxil or Zoloft. Those drugs have a much lower chance for abuse and/or addiction.

I still fail to see how one can adapt dosage, if one doesn't take the correct amount to begin with, because you can't remember how many you've taken

It's a vicious cycle, and reguardless of the potency compared to Rohypnol it's legal and therefore more dangerous imo... people don't know what they are in for when they start taking it...

further, when used to treat anxiety, your dealing with people who aren't mentally stable to start out with and expecting them to excercise discipline with feel good pills that DO affect your short term memory.... Especially when first used
it's far too easy to accidentally overmedicate oneself

Still.... I feel powerless to help my loved ones, not only is my best friends life being FUBAR'ed as we speak, but I fear my sister is completely gone on the damn things

Once you are addicted to them, the downward spiral is fast and hard,
Klonopins,Valium, Dalmane... whatever you can get... and being sober to them seems like a different world

she's been to rehab 3 times (at a cost of almost $50,000), lost her job, played bumper cars all over town including plowing the front end of my Mark VIII. She's screwed me and my family over more times than I can count.... She doesn't need my sympathy she needs a freakin miracle:( My mother does what she can to protect my 8 yr old niece but what must she feel seeing her mother like that... sigh
It's the weakness in the person and the drug both that must be overcome, and this drug seems to make people so very weak

To be honest, I really don't see how that is possible. If someone is taking the amount prescribed to them by a doctor, which would almost certainly be less than 2mg, then it should not affect them so much that they can't even remember if they took it earlier in the day. If it affects them that much, then obviously they are having a negative reaction to the drug and should be taken off of it immediately.

As for your loved ones that are deep into using xanax, I truly hope that they are able to overcome the addiction and get their lives back together. Like I said, it can be a very tough thing to beat, and all you can do is be there to try to help them through these difficult times.

I meant benzodiazapine and don't know why I wrote barbiturate.

Must be my "youthful indiscretions" coming back to haunt me.

I don't get when you guys say it doesn't cause memory loss.... I'm not using my own experience as a basis but from asking people about this night and that night and I ALWAYS get "I did that?? HAHA'" They don't remember anything afterwards, and plainly demonstrate they have no short term memory while "bar-ed out" like asking questions over, and over and over

I saw it repeatedly at my old job, they take one or two at the beginning of the night, get nice and loose, and take more thinking they just took one... then yell about who stole their #$%^

I dunno I just have a hard time thinking it's safe for anyone after seeing so many people get lost in that little "Bar-ed out" world

Dude, that happens from just drinking. I have friends that dont remember pissing in the laundry basket because they thought it was a toilet. Chill out about the short term memory loss. You get high/drunk/whatever you arent at your best. I dont see why you are so shocked by this.

I have had a small prescription for two years and I am happily married etc. My biggest problem right now is that my back is screwed up, and I am trying to get it rehabbed. I haven't had any problems with the Xanax. I like it, it works when I need it. I only take a little bit maybe once a week.

I think these people had bigger issues before taking it. I know exactly how much I have taken. It's called math. I let my my wife take 5mg when she was really stressing out with her job and she claimed to never even feel it.

This same "evil" argument can be made for alcohol etc...

Well you keep referring to them being "Barred-out." A "bar" refers to a 2mg pill. That is a really high dosage for someone that doesn't take the drug regularly, and I'm sure it could cause some memory loss. If prescribed by a doctor, most patients start out at .25 mg. So 8x the reccomended dosage for someone not used to taking the drug could certainly cause adverse reactions.

Honestly, it isn't the drug that is the problem, it is the addiction. It is likely that your sister would have gotten addicted to something else if it hadn't been Xanax. When people get addicted, it is one of the most difficult things to recover from, but it can be done. At this point, my advice (this is going to be hard) is to allow her to hit her bottom. As long as she has outs that include being able to continue drugging, she will take them. One of the most difficult things my wife has ever done was to cut off her twin brother because of his addiction. Eventually, she figured out that the best thing to do was to not give or do anything for him until he can prove to us that he is a responsible adult.

Eventually, with help, she should be able to recover from her addiction and hopefully become the sister that you remember and love again. I have seen it happen hundreds of times and know that it is possible no matter the drug of choice.

Keep in mind that the drug is just a symptom, the addiction is the problem.

Xanax, when used as prescribed, doesn't cause memory loss. If used with alcohol or other substances as is common when it is used as a recreational drug, all bets are off.
