Who are the shooting gaurd free agents that the Rockets could pickup in the offseason to replace WEsley as our starter? Remembering our mistake with Derek Anderson we need someone who is healthy, speedy, a good outside shooter and someone who is athletic. WE have Bogans who is all those things but he is going to be resigned as our 2 gaurd backup. So who fits the mold of 2 gaurd free agents that I just named above? Give me your thoughts guys. Go Rockets!!!
Coincidentally enough, James Posey can opt out of his contract this summer. I'm not really that high on his right now though. He's shooting well from the 3 this year, but the rest of his game seems to have taken a step back the last two years.
Well he's one of these SG/SF swingmen. I just found it to be an interesting tidbit for a thread started by "poseyistheman".
Ronald Murray is a UFA and might be obtainable for the MLE. Bonzi Wells is listed with a team option in 06. I thought he was a UFA.
No way JVG takes on a headcase like Bonzi. We're going to be drafting a shooting guard, not signing one. I just worry that, whoever we draft, JVG will re-sign Wesley and keep running him out there for 30 minutes a night because he's "steady".
when looking to the off-season and free agent pickups a few things come to mind. Obviously given our salary cap situation, we will have only the mle available to us (iirc, d.a. was a lle which can only be used every other year, thus negating this year). The Rockets seem to be very intrigued by spankanoulis and a portion of the mle would have to be used to bring him over. So for the Rockets to use the full mle on a player, they have to like his upside better than spanoulis. Also, I think the Rockets will look hard into getting rid of Juwans contract as they recognize the need to improve team speed. Therefore, if the rox can trade big for small, they could possibly parlay Juwan and pick/Luther Head into a two guard to fit our mold and use the mle to bring over spanoulis and sign a back-up big. Of course, this will be contigent on how well the oft injured not so Swift plays for the remainder of the season. Our final outlet to utilize is the draft, which will probably end up being a low (around 12) pick and probably not be immediately benefitial. My main question here becomes if the rockets think that a guy like McNamara could be a backup point they may be tempted to use the full MLE on a big two guard or small three like Posey.
we do, but in the grand scheme, they are pretty worthless and were used more as salary dumps. Remember that trade exceptions can't be combined with each other or salaries. Theoretically, they could be used in a sign and trade, but the amounts are fairly small and probably not benefitial to the team that would have to assist in the transaction. They only way I would forsee either of those becoming benefitial would be at the trading deadline next year.
The Rockets hold his rookie rights so do not need to use any of the mle. He, like any other drafted rookie, is not treated as a free agent.
the MLE isn't a trade exception, and the trade exceptions for Moochie and DA aren't worth much. I imagine they'll just expire like every other trade exception we've had.
But the problem is that a rookie scale contract is not going to entice Span to come over. He's making over a million dollars net over there. Not to mention that he has a buyout that the Rox may or may not have enough to cover, so he'll likely have to pay the difference. There's no chance that he'll sign with the Rox for the rookie minimum. Rox managment really has to scout him well to see if he's better than using our full MLE on someone else.
1. Mike James (scorer, good shooter, he'd be awesome for the MLE) 2. Sam Cassell (veteran, leader and clutch)
James is going to make more than the MLE. He's never been on a big contract before and this will be his last chance to get one.
JVG took on Alston. Swift and Wells are very good friends, but, someone (on this board) told me that Wells and McGrady hate eachother. If that's not true, Wells would be an interesting prospect, but, he's not a 3 pt. shooter.
