Got lunch from that mall today around 12, 12:30. Work and live about 1.5 miles from there; heard someone at the grocery store describing it on their cellphone, saying she thought the guns were automatic just cause of the rapid fire. Like just about any other shooting, absolutely nothing about this area would make something like this seem expected. The 18-yr old guy didn't even live in this part of town, and apparently it was all apparently just a suicide, as local reports have a friend or girlfriend going to a sherriff's office with his suicide note, saying he wanted to "go out in style."

Remember when the Columbine massacre happened, all the news channels had wall-to-wall coverage for a good 2 weeks during the aftermath.

I just checked the news channels because this is the first I've heard of this shooting. Let's see...

CNN - Brad Pitt on the Larry King show
Headline News - Billy Ray Cyrus interview
Fox - pundits arguing about the Republican debates

It's amazing how desensitized we've become to all of this. Oh, just another rampage killing, ho hum. What's the latest with Britney and K-Fed?

I prefer this to the nonstop coverage. Don't give these clowns the attention. The VT shooter got plenty of attention as did those at Columbine and they became cult heroes and other kids saw such actions as their chance at stardom.

I do, too! Less chance of a copycat.

Of course this crap could be avoided for the most part with decent gun laws, but that is another story.

I was about to type the same thing. What is it about our society here that makes such tragic events so frequent?? I remember for Columbine they were blaming video games and movies. Then they had this kid who tried to kill his caretaker (successful) and his mother (not successful), and they blamed it on a messed up up bringing by some "Jesus Freak" group. What in the hell is going on??

I think our schools are getting more and more unsafe as well, and I'm worried that my kid's safety in the future will be in jeopardy if this continues. It seems it's getting worse and worse. How can we fix this mess??

Well we are the only western country where a 18 year old can go into a corner wal-mart and buy a rifle without any permit, education, or psychological evalution.

Well, in general we think death from gun violence is a good price to pay for gun ownership rights. I doubt it will change any time soon. Your best bet is to move to Canada. And with $ going down the tube, it is not that bad a choice economically.
