Bizarre incident, in which the dude just blasted himself. Link Gunfire Rings Out In Mall Teen Shoots Self In Buttocks POSTED: 8:59 a.m. CDT July 2, 2003 UPDATED: 11:53 a.m. CDT July 2, 2003 HOUSTON -- A gunshot rang out Tuesday in a west Houston shopping mall's food court, News2Houston reported. Police said Joshua Michael Short, 18, accidentally shot himself in the backside with a derringer around 4 p.m. at Memorial City Mall, on Interstate 10 at Gessner. "He got up from the food court and accidentally shot himself in the buttocks and he was transported to Ben Taub and he's in stable condition," said Officer Catherine Truhan, with the Houston Police Department. Investigators said that the unidentified teenager had the gun tucked inside the waistband of his pants. He somehow brushed the trigger and the gun fired into his hip. "We saw him sitting on the ground. He had his handcuffs just laying there," said Brandon Rees, a witness. "It's pretty stupid." Witnesses said the gunshot shocked them. "It's devastating because you're not safe anymore," said Dayzy Malakul, a shopper. "I just heard a big bang and everybody just started looking (to see) what was going on. It kind of scared us," said Rommy Patel, a witness. "I just heard real loud (noise). We just thought it was like a terrorist attack or something," said Jose Lopez, a witness. "(It was) surprisingly loud, real loud." Police said that the teenager was too young to carry a concealed weapon and he could face charges of carrying a weapon without a license. It is legal to carry a handgun if the owner has a concealed handgun permit, unless a sign is posted prohibiting weapons. Experts said that the first thing people should do when they hear a gunshot is to get out of the line of fire. "If a weapon goes off and you see it, the first thing one ought to do is try to take some cover," said Don Clark, News2Houston consultant and former head of the FBI's Houston office. "If a person says, 'Give me your jewelry,' then I'm going to give them my jewelry. But on the same token, if they want to put the gun in my face and tell me to come and go with them, then I think I'm going to try to do something to defend myself," Clark said.
Wow, shooting yourself in the ass, that's almost as stupid as legally allowing people to carry concealed handguns.
Im not sure. I think I would have made sure that Im directly in the line of fire after I hear a gunshot.
and how much of our tax dollars went into research these OH so CAPTAINS OF THE OBVIOUS REEEAAALLL MMMEEENNN OF GGENUIS!! Rocket River
Your comment shows your ignorance. Funny how you think you are smarter than the legislators of 35 states that have right to carry laws to allow people the right to provide for their own defense. More RTC states, less crime. The nation's violent crime rate has decreased every year since 1991 and in 2002 hit a 23-year low. In the same period, 17 states adopted and 13 states improved RTC laws. RTC states have lower violent crime rates, on average: 24% lower total violent crime, 22% lower murder, 37% lower robbery, and 20% lower aggravated assault. The five states with the lowest violent crime rates are RTC states. (Data: FBI)
Stupid. The people who get concealed carry licenses have to get extensive background checks & take a training course w/ their weapon. This has NOTHING to do w/ some wannabe thug carrying a derringer ILLEGALLY, & shooting his own ass. Not allowing law-abiding people to carry firearms would not stop jackass thugs like this from carrying ILLEGALLY.
What are you people doing? This is the Hangout, not Debate and Discussion. This thread is not for debating the merits of gun control, it's for making fun of the idiot who shot himself in the ass.
