Wilt Chamberlain played in an era when basketball players did not lift weights. He was basically being guarded by little boys.

O'Neal is the most brutal, imposing presence in the game's history. It is amazing that a man his size has such incredible agility.

P.S. : The Lakers cannot and will not be stopped until Shaq retires. Shaq is the greatest big man ever and Kobe will go down as the 2nd greatest shooting guard of all time, when his career winds down. Anyone who argues otherwise is blind. The two will go down as the greatest duo in league history.

Wilt was stronger than Shaq. He also had more basketball talent and could run faster, jump higher, and miss more free throws.

Shaq plays against a bunch of stiffs and does not rebound, block shots, or play defense particularly well. His offense is extremely limited aside from the bulldozer dunk.

I'd love to see some tapes of the Big O and Chamberlain in one of their most dominating games. I bet it'd be incredible to watch. I saw on ESPN2 earlier today some tapes from the 80s and how they played the game back then. Not much defense was played, or atleast as agressive defense as nowadays, nor were there really athletic players back then as well, but man could they play basketball fluently, some of those passes were outright beautiful, and they shot automatically. Perhaps its because it was some of the best highlights of the 80s, but was interesting nonetheless. So much basketball I wasn't alive to see, and such a shame :D

The problem I have with this argument is that Wilt is punished for being ahead of his time. The very title of your thread is "most dominating big man of all time", yet you begin by trying to explain away his dominance. Dominant is dominant, and no one ever has been, or ever will be as dominant as the Stilt.

Shaq is lucky enough to play at a time when there are absolutely no other centers worth mentioning.

Plus he is the most horrible man on man defender and just as bad on help defense.

Wilt and Hakeem played both sides of the court.

How many years did Wilt play without the 3 sec rule (I know I know, the rule was in place because of him). But if you gave Shaq a few years to play without the 3 second rule, he probably would have a few 60-70 pt games.

There's no comparison. When Wilt played he was one of TWO seven footers in the league. There's over fifty of them now. Guys are much bigger and more talented then in Wilt's day--you ever see a 7-footer running the point, hitting threes, banging inside on Vintage NBA? Turn on NBA 2Night and you'll see it.

As for the strength issue, Shaq is far bigger than Wilt was--just look at the videos and pictures. Yeah, Wilt was a lot bigger than everyone else in his day, but Shaq's bigger then everyone in today's game, which is saying a lot. Shaq is an freak of nature we may never see again: 350+ pounds of muscle, with speed and agility. Wilt was just a tall guy with a little muscle, which went a long way forty years ago. Shaq in Wilt's era would have never missed a shot Hell, KG is probably bigger. I'm sure Duncan could hold his own.

I've seen tapes of Chamberlain and I have to say I was disappointed. Maybe it was the rules of the game at the time (I know they changed a few things because of him), but he kept putting up finger rolls and lay ups, whereas Shaq just rolls over guys. Maybe the refs were less lenient in their approach to charging calls, but nevertheless, Shaq is clearly a man among boys in any era.

Nope Shaq plays at a time when all the other big men are scared of him and conveniently play PF. There are plenty of 7 footers who could match up against him but choose not to. These guys are scared of Shaq.

If nothing else these big boddied PF should at least take their turns guarding him in the playoffs instead of hiding behing the David Robinson's of the world.

i'm glad you are open for discusion:D
i think shaq is unbelievble dominant, but wilt was too, you can not compaire the two because of the difference in time, You do not know what would have happened if shaq played then or if wilt plays now. you just can't compaire

Don't forget that Wilt led the league in assists just for the hell of it one season.

In Wilt's defense, one most keep in mind a few things when discrediting his stats:

    1) The league was smaller back then and there werent nearly as many teams

    2) This means that he had to play against legit centers, like Russell (maybe the greatest defensive center of all time) and Thurmond more often than Shaq has to play against legit centers in todays NBA.

I'd go with wilt, but you do have to ask yourself, where are the rings? He wasn't so dominant or he's have more rings. Dominant players, especially the most dominant of all time, should have some rings. If shaq gets like six rings I think Wilt is eliminated from the discussion despite his raw stats.

The three second rule was implemented in 1944!!!. I think that was a little before Wilt's time.

The fact that this conversation even came up is an insult to the Stilt. Has anybody even seen any tape of Wilt playing? The man was simply unstoppable. He combined the power of Shaq with the grace and fluidity of Dream and the court awareness of Walton. The whole "there was no competition" argument is pretty weak. Shaq isn't playing against hall of famers on a nightly basis, and there are plenty of seven foot stiffs these days. The fact is that, like Wilt, Shaq has the advantage almost every night and should dominate. Wilt wasn't exactly playing against scrubs, either...Willis Reed, Nate Thurmond, Bill Russell...

Wilt averaged over 20 points and 20 rebounds for ten consecutive seasons and over 30 points and 20 rebounds for seven consecutive seasons! Shaq couldn't do that in his wildest dreams! Shaq hasn't even come CLOSE to averaging 20 rebounds in a season.

Wilt also averaged 48.5 minutes per game in 1961-1962....That means that he played EVERY...SINGLE...MINUTE of every game...all while averaging 50 POINTS and 25 REBOUNDS per game! Did I also mention that Wilt never fouled out of a game...not ONCE? He was also one of the best passing centers EVER, averaging over 8 assists in a two year span...

Shaq, the most dominant center of all time? I got five words for you...ARE YOU F***ING KIDDING ME?!

Yes stronger - Wilt picked up a 250 lb opposing player with one arm once. Strength is not completely determined by how big you look.
