    http://www.azcentral.com/sports/suns/articles/2009/03/30/20090330spt-sunsshaq.html

Suns center Shaquille O'Neal did not have much to say about Sacramento center Spencer Hawes posting a career-high 20 points on Sunday night, other than to call out the Suns guards for making the team's post defense vulnerable by allowing penetration.

But he did have words about another center, rookie teammate Robin Lopez.

O'Neal and Lopez had an animated talk during a break late in Thursday's loss in Portland.

"Put somebody on their (expletive) back," O'Neal said he told Lopez. "Don't let anybody oopsy-doopsy layup on you and be laughing at you. Have you ever seen me get dunked on? No, because I put (expletive) on their backs. Period.

"If you're going to be a big man, be a big man. Don't be out there (expletive) around. Lay somebody on their (expletive) back. Period. Wilt (Chamberlain) told me that. Bill Russell told me that. Hakeem (Olajuwon) told me that. All the great big men told me that. . . . That's what I'm trying to teach him, instead of just being out there like a loose tree blowing in the wind. Do something."

    O'Neal called Lopez "the future."

"He's got to toughen up," he said. "Step up. He's got some big shoes to fill because after I'm done, it's his turn."

Or someone lay Yao like that.

Some are going to criticize Shaq for this, but I think it's part of the game to be yelled at.

If I were a rookie in the NBA and Shaq talked to me like that I'd probably take it to heart.

Shaq is right on this and he's doing the right thing here mentoring the young kid. Just like Deke telling Yao he shouldn't be taking charges/flops. True great centers intimidate offensive players from going into the lane. Taking a charge does not intimidate anyone. Swatting their shot back to them or laying someone on their back while going for the block will make them think twice before driving in again.

At least he didn't tell Glenn Davis "throw a big baby fit right now, or we're not going to McDonalds tonight"

That's exactly what Yao needs to do. Too bad Shaq isn't the backup center for this team.

Sounds like Shaq is just blowing off some steam. hes lashing out at a rookie who plays like 5 minutes a night instead of looking at his own play.

Phoenix's team defense has been terrible since Shaq got there. I don't care about his numbers this season, he's a lazy defender and he should take some responsibility for the Suns embarassing season.

When was Phoenix's defense not terrible? They were playing the Seven Second or Less offense, and defense were optional for them. The only one playing good defense on that squad was Marion, and maybe Bell. The reason they traded for Shaq in the first place was trying to improve their defense.

I saw Shaq berate Lopez on that play and Lopez didn't look like he appreciated it. I see why now, I'd be pissed too if someone was using f**k this and f**k that if he was trying to help me. I was also wondering what Shaq was upset about, it was a layup and not someone putting a facial on Lopez.

I disagree about Yao, he doesn't have to be a thug to be effective, his length changes a lot of shots and he blocks his fair share of shots even though he's not a leaper. He seems to getting calls lately also, early in the season he would go straight up when an opposing player drove the lane and he would get called for a foul. After protesting all season to the refs that he went straight up, he now seems to be getting that non-call now.

As soon as he lays someone out people will be calling for a 10 game suspension.

rightfully so. There's no telling how nasty things can get if everybody "put somebody on their back"

Shaq rarely gets dunked on... not because he block many shots... when he see a player going straight at him and he knows he has a very slim chance in blocking it... he'll either

    1. foul him hard and move out the way
    2. completely move away and let an easy dunk.

While Mount Mutumbo.. stays there. He's the guard dog, noone is coming into his house. He blocks some... and he get dunked on some.. it happens.

Someone who never gets dunked on is someone who never dares to block a dunk. Not getting dunked on is overrated.

Robin Lopez is not 13 yrs old. This is a mans game.

    You dont know basketball.
You are used to Yao's soft play.
You never watched Hakeem or Shaq play in there prime.
