As I said earlier in the Hangout thread I hadn’t heard of Shang Chi before but I haven’t followed comics that closely. I’ll probably see it but probably not in a theater and not in first release. From the trailers it looks pretty entertaining but I don’t feel as an Asian American this is a validation or that I have to watch it to advance Asian Americans.
The CEO for Disney called the theatre schedule for Shang-Chi an experiment because it’s 45 days in the theatre before any other type of release. Simu Liu obviously misconstrued that comment. However, there is a legitimate gripe that the hype from Disney is low compared to other MCU movies. That may be based on the Covid Delta variant projections of low turnout. Personally I will be seeing it in the theatre.
I think part of it is there just isn't much 'grass roots' hype. People were hanging on every shred of internet news when Black Panther was being made. Most people just found out about Shang-Chi from the previews.
That's a good point. And TBH, Shang-Chi has always been a niche/secondary character in the Marvel Comics Universe. BP has been a star.
I won’t see Shang-Chi in theaters. I didn’t see Dr Strange either for same reason: I didn’t grow up with them. I saw black panther due to the hype and it was good.
The last Marvel movie I saw in a theater was Infinity War and haven't seen many of them in theaters. Most of them I've seen on streaming or on long flights. I don't have any plans on seeing this one in a theater and the only upcoming movie I would like to see in a theater is Dune.
He’s a character made by marvel back in the day to be similar to Bruce Lee Usually these obscure characters show up on Netflix
I liked Dr Strange, and I knew him because of the Comics. He wasn't as mainstream like the Hulk or Iron Man though.
Not ready to put Shang Chi up to Jerry Lin status yet, so I'll hold off burning down my Micky Mouse collection. More like Joe Cheese.
To be fair Disney has the impossible task of never offending anyone ever. They are certainly not perfect, and have had their share of pervy hidden messages in 90’s films and other snapfoos. I don’t really get the actor getting worked up on this one though unless he didn’t really read the full quote. All the marvel nerds I know of are super stoked about this movie and it looks like they put some money into the production. Marketing could be better.
Oh he got MOREY-IED https://deadline.com/2021/09/shang-chi-china-release-simu-liu-marvel-1234830474/ ‘Shang-Chi’ China Release Unlikely In Wake Of Unearthed Comments By Star Simu Liu; ‘The Eternals’ Hopes In Question The prospects for Disney/Marvel’s Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings getting a China release date are dwindling. This in the wake of comments originally made by star Simu Liu in 2017 which resurfaced this week and have made waves on Chinese social media. In a 2017 interview with the CBC, the Chinese-Canadian actor referenced his parents telling him of conditions under Communist rule and referring to China as a “third world” country where people were “dying of starvation.”
