we dont need no stinkin' sign stealing when we got Von Wafer! He'll just leave a guy wide open so portland can pass it to them for an easy layup, no play set up from portland, so no signs given, so shane isnt needed!! <sarcasm>
this is somewhat related i guess...i was looking over the game again...there's a play in the second where ron is guarding roy, chuck is in the game, so is lowry. Blake is up top calling the play, then lowry starts signaling over his head, i'm assuming this is what McMillan mentioned, that the rockets signal a play similar to theirs so they can relate...well chuck who's at the FT area seems to pick up on it quickly and he points to the backdoor (ron and roy are on that side of the court on the wing), about 2 seconds after this, roy cuts backdoor for the alley oop. Now i dont know if ron wasn't paying attention to chuck/lowry or what, mainly because he was out of view when chuck pointed, but i hope this doesn't happen often during games, if it does, he needs to be pay more attention to what they're telling him.
I read recently somewhere (may have been that NYT magazine piece) that Shane will sometimes pretend he knows what the other team is doing, even when he doesn't. Just to make them nervous.
Battier doesn't steal their signs. He just acts like he knows what they are doing to confuse him. I'm pretty sure he talked about it in that article about him. He yells out what the opposing team yells out just to get them wondering if he knows it.
He has steal a good number of them, otherwise Nate wouldn't be trying to hide them. Portland would have looked at tape and realized he wasn't getting them right at all and realized they didnt need to hide them if he pretended all the time.
I think I read somewhere that Shane calls out the other team's plays (even if he doesn't know the play is) just to put some doubt in the other team's heads that the Rockets know what's coming. I believe he said it's something he learned from Coach K at Duke. edit: found the article! http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/6350828.html Shane Battier might be the key to the Rockets winning in the playoffs, but we’ll get to that later. First, though, we take you to courtside Saturday night at Toyota Center and to a scene that was both fascinating and bizarre. It played out time and again. As Los Angeles Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy called out a play for his team, Battier would turn to his teammates and describe the play. Sometimes, he’d even use the same terminology. Don’t you just hate smart guys? “That’s a Duke thing,” Battier said Monday . Thanks, Mr. Obvious. “No, really,” Battier said. “Coach K taught us that. Even if you don’t know the play, call it out.” Why? “It puts doubt in the other team’s mind. Maybe just a little bit. They’re like, ‘Wow, they know what we’re doing.’ ” Maybe he should call Mike Krzyzewski and ask him for advice on getting Ron Artest to run the play that’s called. <me> I love that last line, by Mr. Justice.
The rockets suck. just checking if people actually read replies or not because it doesnt seem like it..
Yes, but there was a TrueHoop article with Rockets advanced scout, and he said that Battier frequently will call out the actual plays as well. He does both.
