Shane Battier's Take of Rockets' Chance For Making the Playoff

Shane Battier talked about what the Houston Rockets need to do in order to make the playoff in his personal blog sponsored by China Peak on sina.com.

What do you guys think about his comments about Defense and Energy should be the trademark/identity of the Rockets? Does it contradict with what Rick Adelman is supposed to bring to the Rockets?

Needless to say, it has been an up and down year for the Rockets. There have been games that we should have won but let slip away for some reason or another. Those are the most frustrating games without a doubt. After 42 games, our record stands at 23-19. If the season ended today, we would be out of the playoffs. Ouch! Luckily we still have 40 games left to make our move towards the playoffs. The Western Conference is the tougher conference. Besides the standard pace setters San Antonio, Dallas, and Phoenix, there are a number of teams playing at a very high level in the West. New Orleans and Portland are the most surprising teams that have played great. Chris Paul is having an MVP season for the Hornets and the Blazers are playing great team basketball. Golden State, Los Angeles Lakers, and the Denver Nuggets are also playing at a high level as well. Utah, the team that beat us in the playoffs last year, would not even qualify if the playoffs started today. Utah is a really good team too.

While we haven't played our best basketball, our team still feels that we can make a push for the playoffs. It helps to have Tracey McGrady back. Yao is still our best player and our pillar, but we cannot make a push without all of our best players. After 42 games last year our record was 26-15. This year our record is 23-19. Only 3 games behind last years pace! I couldn't believe that stat when I heard it.

We must play incredible team basketball. We must play with a determined passion every night and not take any game for granted. Defense and energy must become our trademark if we have any shot of reaching the post season.

We have not given up on the season. We know we have a great deal of catching up and it will be a long road, but we feel if we come together as a team then we can accomplish anything.

I agree that defense and energy should be our trademark. However, I think T-Mac is our best player in todays NBA game.

Please don't hijack my thread into one of these dog fight threads of who is the best player or who is the leader of this team.

My question is on whether defense and energy should be the trademark for the Rockets? And whether that in itself is contradictory to what Rick Adelman is preaching and trying to bring to the team, i.e. the Rockets should put more focus on offense?

Well the Rockets dont have any really good shooters so defense and energy is the way to go.

no need for that. it doesn't matter who our best player is.

and shane's a politician anyways. when tmac came back in his first game, shane said it's great to have our best player back. this time he says yao. it doesn't really matter.

Shane needs to stop taking so many charges, his acting career is in jepordy. I think he could be the next Vin diesel.

We truly are the energy capital of the nation we have made some updates to our energy by now having Hayes, Scola and Landry to power our team to the next level and with a spark like Tmac and a fuel like Yao our chemistry will only grow and there is no telling how far we will go!!!

I have an idea. Why don't T-Mac and Yao compete to see who the best player is based on who scores more? They can both scream for the ball on the offensive end and when they get it refuse to pass so that they can drive their shot total up and get more baskets. When all is said and done, at the end of the season when both of them are watching the playoffs from the comfort of their homes, we'll finally know who the best player on the team is.

Not really up today we played one more game than last year, but we are 3.5 games behind not 3 and 4 in the lost column, only if we could have take care of NO and Phili in the 4th Q.

Well, it is a foregone conclusion long time ago.

Shane Battier REALLY writes his own stuff for this blog on sina.com, cos this is a China Peak sponsored one, and I believe it's one of his contractual obligations for doing that.
