If the Rockets had a shot at Roy they were going to take him. Knowing what you know today, Brandon Roy was going to be Rookie of the Year and Shane was going to be a Defensive Monster, would you prefer to keep Roy or pick Rudy Gay to trade to Memphis?
Brandon will be a star, and Shane will always be the ultimate teammate. You could probably make a poll.
i would prefer brandon roy+stromile. ive got big love for battier, but he isnt consistent 3rd string scorer
every team needs a battier kind of guy. he's such a great glue guy and he brings so many intangibles to the table. the team would not be as great as they are now without he of the giant dome (shane).
Something to consider is Roy's injury history. He is having knee issues already in his rookie year and Shane has been a rock this year, seems very durable. Roy if healthy would be a stud on the Rockets and he would be on a rookie contract allowing cap space to get another player(s) that would help the team. So I would vote Roy and deal with his injury issues for 4 years.
It's a tough decision. Shane's recent shootng slump makes it a bit easier for me to give this answer: I'd take Roy.
im taking roy however i think we are all going to see shane knock down some monster 3s in the playoffs and he will become that much more valuable
Battier or Gay is a much easier question (and according to the Rockets never even considered) but Battier or Roy is tough. I obviously love what Shane brings to the table, and I wouldn't want to shake up team chemistry because we know for a fact that it's great and that doesn't come easy. It sure would be nice to have a consistent 3rd scorer with good size who can also run the PG position when you need it. For the future I'd obviously rather have Roy, but I'm not sure about this year or the next couple. I really can't even give an answer but I voted Roy for the fact that he's just a rookie and will be producing for another decade.
The point is that they didn't have a shot at Roy, so why ask the question at all. Kind of like asking Shane Battier or Kevin Durant.
Well they were only 1 or 2 draft spots off from picking up Roy.. (I think 2?) I recall the Rockets won a very hard fought, yet meaningless game near the end of the season that screwed their draft position.
Even if we did lose that game, there's no real proof we would end up with the pick that would land Roy. Heck, we could have ended up with the 9th. Just like how the worst team in the league almost always never gets the #1 pick.
You have to love Shane but Roy's advantages over Alston, especially to this team, is just too great. I love Shane, but I'm sorry, Roy would have to have been the pick, ESPECIALLY if we knew how good he'd be. But, Shane has been doing so much on the defensive end. He guards the opposing team's best player every night and he always hustles and plays smart. It's really a tough choice. I still think if we had Roy running the offense, with his ability to shoot and take it to the hoop, our 1-2 punch would be so much more formidable since teams can't slack off on Roy.
Not saying we would have gotten the #1 pick. After the top 3 picks, the rest follows the order of the worst record, hence the "Lottery" We had the 8th worst record and failed to get one of the top 3 picks, which is why we ended up with the 8th pick.. Roy was projected as a top 5 or 6 pick, he ended up going 6th.. I recall Portland and Minnesota had the 6th and 7th picks, I am not certain though. In any case, Roy was gone before we even had a chance, and we might have had a chance if we did not win that game.
Even though Battier was the Rockets second choice after they couldn't get Roy and Roy proving to be the better player I'd have to say opt for Battier. Knowing what we know, Roy was out for a 20 game stretch that finished just several games before Yao went down. He's also been bothered by knee problems in the past several games. His knees were also one of the issues brought up on this board during pre-draft.
yeah, i don't remember exactly, but we did have a shot at Roy, except a couple of the teams conspired/outsmarted us and made some deals to pull the rug out from under us. was it boston and portland? or minnesota? i can't remember the exact scenario, it was damn confusing and convoluted. i'm sure someone here can recount exactly what happened, or link to the thread describing what happened. but i remember we did have a shot at him, until the team that actually picked him, well, picked him, and it seemingly made no sense for that team to pick him, until we later learned of the cunning backstage deals that were going on. can anyone explain that remembers better?
not as long as Portland was higher than us...reports had them going after Roy with everythign they had. IF losingt that game would have put us before Portland, then you have a point....but iirc, that wasnt happening. oh...and btw...the only current Rocket I have a jersey for is.....Shane.
If I recall the correctly the Rockets needed Foye to be available when they picked for a trade for Roy to go ahead.
minnesota took roy with the hopes that we would take foye for them at the 8th spot. When portland saw that coming, they really wanted roy and thus took foye, knowing minnesota would trade roy for foye. it was portland who screwed us, again.
okay, i got it (i think), thanks! even on patricia's site, you have to read cafrefully and look at it a while to figure out what's going on, if you didn't know already. that number 7 pick has got two long confusing footnotes hanging off of it, for goodness sakes! a powerpoint or step-by-step timeline would help. but the point is, yes, we had a legitimate shot at Roy, so I think the poll question is valid.
