Ronald Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal reports: With Thursday's trade deadline fastly approaching, Grizzlies president of basketball operations is hoping for that magical call. The one that lands him Magic swingman Mike Miller....Now, may of you might wonder, why do the Grizzlies need another small forward when they already have Shane Battier?

Is this an opportunity for the Rockets to acquire a team-oriented, intelligent, skilled SG so the Rockets can finally afford to make Mobley the Sixth Man Extraordinaire?

    I'd rather have Wesley Person.

Btw, consider the Grizz players, either Gasol or Gooden is a good addition............

Gooden needs/wants the ball, and never gives it up. The guys is insanely trigger-happy.

As for Battier, he's no SG. The guy is too slow, doesn't have speed or range. So he's a major liability.

Yeah but he would make a very nice SF - better than Posey.

Not an urgent need but just an observation.

no. shane battier is a pile of steaming crap. i've never enjoyed seeing somebody fail in the NBA moer than i've enjoyed watching battier. he came into the league with a cocky, "i'm better than everybody else because i attended 4 years of college attitude", and expected everything to be handed to him on a silver platter, and has found himself riding the pine.

No way, not better than Posey. Battier is BARELY decent at everything. Maybe if we had all our pieces in place, but right now, what we'd give up to acquire him would be more useful in other trades.

I have a gut feeling the Mavs will get Battier.

Battier can knock down an open 15 ft jumpshot. Posey can't.
Battier is also a better passer and can actually dribble.

Like I said, not the most urgent need, but an improvement.

Posey can finish on the fast break. Posey is MUCH more effective against the Kobe's and the T-Mac's. BTW, Posey is actually a good passer too, although he can't put the ball on the floor like Battier. Posey brought the ball up constantly when he was with Denver.

I'd rather take my chances on Posey developing a SLIGHTLY improved jumpshot, than Battier ever improving at anything.

Unless Battier shows some deadly range, he's very very very normal.

You're right, it's not a pressing need, but still, I'd rather keep Posey because he brings things that we don't have. Battier doesn't bring anything we don't have.

Posey is a SF who can play SG and Battier, while he can play SF, is better suited for SG. I'd rather keep Posey on the floor with Battier, and have Mobley come in with his heart and firepower ablazin.' Also, in the games I have seen him play, he always has some steals and hustle plays (requiring quickness and poise) that keep the Grizz in games.

He probably is better suited for SG, but that's like a last ditch effort to make him useful. The guy has 4 years in college and a full NBA season, there's not much room for improvement. Right now, T-Mo is a better candidate to be our starter this year. At the rate T-Mo is improving at, if he learns to be decent at putting the ball on the floor, he would be a brilliant addition to our starting line up.

Right now, T-Mo is a much better option.

    rocketfat -

Yours has GOT to be one of the most irrational and off-base assessments of a players personality that I have EVER heard. I read, and watched, TONS of material on Battier before the draft and EVERYONE who was interviewed said what a decent, UNSELFISH, hardworking, hustling player he was, and that IN SPITE of his lack of true talent, he makes up for it with heart, desire and hard work: Pretty much everything that is lacking with the Rockets.

I was hoping against hope that we could get Battier to go along with Ming on draft day. I would trade for him in a New York second just because of his intangibles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Me too. He is a bad ass three point shooter and Lord knows we need a consistent one.

uhhh...them you must have been REALLY surprised that battier didn't even get drafted!!

dude, battier was in last year's draft. sounds like you are really on top of things.

you are just another in the crowd of people who just love battier for all of his self-promotion of the fact that he stayed in school all 4 years. the guy is a damn joke. i don't give a damn about all his hard work, he's a nice guy, blah, blah, blah. he was an overhyped, i-think-i'm-better-than-you, pompous scrub. i'm not sure how many of his interviews you actually saw.

Rocketfat: Rockets-R-Us was referring to the pre-draft supposition that the Rockets were trying to engineer a trade to acquire Battier. Failing that, the Rockets had their fingers crossed for Stoudemire or Nachbar, whichever was available.

As far the "joke" part of your post, there are a lot of teams who wanted and still want Battier.

Battier is WAY better then Posey, and his Basketball IQ would blend in very nicely with Yao.

I would trade Mobley for him in a heartbeat.

Shane knows how the play the game the right way. He lacks speed, but he can rebound and pass. He's a team player. A blue-collar worker.

He has a decent 15 foot shoot too.

    I like. :D

I would think Mobley would be a more valuabe trade commodity now than Battier. Thus Mobley for Battier and our first round draft pick back. (since we could be lotto bound)

    TRADE ACCEPTED.

But if possible, I would still prefer Mobley and Griff for Brand, or maybe Griff and Posey plus the first round draft pick we got back from the Mobley trade for Brand. (This would be very entising for the Clips)

    TRADE ACCEPTED

    Team outlook

    Francis
    Battier
    Morris
    Brand
    Yao

Battier is nice, but I second the Wesley Person comments (or third, as it were).
