this is really lame.... Sigur Ros refuses to allow their music to be used for commercial advertisement. Why? I have no clue. Probably because they are a bunch of giant gays, but it's their music and their right to do whatever they want... so what does corporate slim do? compose music that sounds almost exactly the same and use that instead of Sigur Ros music. Some of these ads are stealing more than their music... the running through the fields naked..(see the cover of we play endlessly) the guy standing on the edge of the building, arms spread out...(see Tom Cruise in Vanilla Sky while The Nothing Song is playing) I'm not sure if this makes me wanna laugh, vomit or get angry. I guess I'll just laugh. Have a listen... <object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/GMJ_qS_9PfY?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/GMJ_qS_9PfY?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/qns_gco6G4s?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/qns_gco6G4s?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/gvU7c6FlhS4?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gvU7c6FlhS4?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/5wWOYbp-iMA?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/5wWOYbp-iMA?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> Sigur Ros: hoppípolla Spoiler <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/hnAwPeqrdAk?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/hnAwPeqrdAk?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/gWndwcGIsL0?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gWndwcGIsL0?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/sbrrW4AsbaU?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/sbrrW4AsbaU?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> Sigur Ros: svefn-g-englar Spoiler <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8L64BcCRDAE?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8L64BcCRDAE?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/166hxqtCMt4?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/166hxqtCMt4?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> Sigur Ros: Olsen Olsen Spoiler <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/j2GjOC79gVI?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/j2GjOC79gVI?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> this was pulled from a posting on Sigur Ros website... http://www.sigur-ros.co.uk/media/homage-or-fromage.php
Well, they definitely had Hoppípolla in the "Children of Men" trailer, but I guess that is different than product advertising and it was okay because it was a frickin' awesome movie.
if you are not a Sigur Ros fan I don't see how you can call this a ripoff. if you are a fan or at least a member on their message boards, I guess you could see the resemblance in styles. it's all piano music, heavy with orchestral strings and xylophone/bells.
Some of the commercials sounded similar, but at least in none of them they were singing in Hopelandic. I give them a pass.
Would you say the same thing about the Beatles? Many many bands (outside of the Rap/Hip Hop world where its much more common) do not like the idea of their music selling products. Heck, I'd almost say that Most bands don't like their music being sold for commercial use. Movies are something entirely different in their eyes. Ads are usually seen as a part of "selling out" - compromising the musicians integrity for money. (obviously Moby isn't one of these people) Heck, the Fat Boys sued Miller because they used Fat Boy lookalikes in a Joe Piscapo (sp) Miller light commercial in the 80's. They won because Miller Actually asked them to be in the commercial but they refused on the premise that much of their fans were underage & they didn't want to promote alcohol to minors. (oh Snoop Dog, you could've learned from those guys)

i know landlord can speak for himself, but i think his point is that they should be selling out - advertisers are stealing their music anyway, so might as well make some bling on it. i dont know why more artists dont go the barry manilow route and write straight up jingles. i actually respect their position - i have a ton of cd's where i skip the song that was a commercial jingle - it just ruins it for me - for example, im a big jesus and mary chain fan and even though their album honeys dead came out in 1992 i still remember that one song that molson ice used for a commercial and i skip it everytime. i dont know sigur ros well enough to be able to pick out specific songs advertisers are ripping off, but i hear it all the time watching tv - its pretty easy to figure out which song the jingle writers were told to sound like. why pay smashmouth $250k to use one of their songs when you can pay some random jingle writer $5-$10k to write a knockoff? that reminds me of tom waits vs. cheetos - they wanted him to voice chester cheetah and he refused so they got a sound-alike and he sued and won.
The hired musician is paid for original music but sometimes if they're fans of a band they'll reference those bands. Other times if the similiarity is too close they get sued. The corporate people have no idea.
The business class is only the business class because they lack the natural-ability and the passion to be the creative class - so the business class makes it their business to steal as much, and as often, as they can from the creative class.
if you listen to the videos posted, and then the originals by Sigur Ros, especially the two svefn-g-englar remakes and without question the Olsen Olsen, I dont see how anyone could not identify it as a ripoff. Its blatant. listen to the Destino video. 00:36 mark. pass will be revoked.
I have two friends who both had/have respectable music careers that owe more to car commercials than anything else for both money earned and visibility of their music. A third friend still lives off bumper music for the Playboy Channel. I'd sell out yesterday if offered the chance.
