    Both computers have network cards
    New computer is running XP

Check the workgroup names on both machines. Make sure they are the same.

also check with ipconfig /all at the command prompt to ensure that both ip addresses are configured similiarly..ie..192.168.0.x
or somethiing similiar..as long as the first three octets are the same...(the first three sets of numbers)

first things to check...hard to go past that yet...

    Smeg -

I have mine own half assed network.

I have a desktop Win XP Pro machine with 2 nics in it.

One nic goes to the cable modem, the other nic to a 4 port hub. Then I setup Internet connection sharing on the desktop with 2 nics and now I can plug anything into the hub and it gets a NAT'ed IP. It's cool. Not too good at transferring between PC's (lots of packet collisions) because of the crappy hub, but it browses like a champ.

    Cheap/Easy. :)
