We all know that post 9-11, Patriot Act, etc. the government has increased their ability and willingness to look for threats everywhere, including the internet. Even prior to that there were certain topics which resulted in their inceptors being 'flagged' for further review. Considering the number of topics we discuss in here on a regular basis which would probably get initial attention from automatic flags, and considering several of our posters less than happy sentiments about the administration, seriously...how many of us, if any, do you feel have been personally 'flagged'?

I may be overly optimistic but I would like to think between 0-2.

Really? From what I've heard, people just saying certain words like 'Osama' and 'Al Queda' activates a computer flag. And if your name comes up next to those kinds of terms often, they take a look, or at least make a note to keep an ye open. If your name comes up with those often, and you are expressing less than approval for the administration, and I'm guessing this part, I'd assume that you'd be liable for some kind of flag.

Curious, though, who do you see as likely candidates?

    Don't let them scare you.

    I really believe zero.

Well, maybe, MacBeth, since he is sort of a foreigner. ;)

Lol. I wouldn't be scared, and to a certain degree I'd even understand. ( Not about me, about certain key words, etc.)

Well like I said I was probably overly naive in believing that the govt wouldn't snoop that much. I might also have a very personalized view of things. I know that we are, for the most part, partaking in good natured and spirited debate with nobody really having any intentions of doing any harm.

In my opinion the likely candidates would be adeelsidiquii, and Khan because because they've argued against this country's policy in the middle east and in regards in to Israel. I believe they might be profiled because of their religion.

If I had to expand the list I would say rimrocker, glynch, batman jones, and anyone else who has mentioned participating in campaign work for any candidates. I don't think I've mentioned any that I worked for, so I think I'm safe.

Oh yeah, and of course you because you are a foreign interloper, and agitator :)

Excellent question M B. I've thought about this actually and realized it wasn't a concern for me as I so WHOLE HEARTEDLY support our strong, brave, and HANDSOME President George W Bush and ALL the tough decisions he has had to make during the ONGOING war on terror. His financial policies are INGENIOUS and FORWARD THINKING. His daughters are role models for ANY and ALL Austinites. His wife is a great maker of PIES and other TREATS...

    ;)

Leave me out of it, baby. Only candidate I ever worked for was Governor Moonbeam.

Wouldn't surprise me at all to find out several of us had been flagged. All good patriots know that, since 9/11 changed everything, it is crucial to our nation's security that the government spy on anyone who doesn't support Bush. If you're not for him, you're agin him. CREEP lives.

I wonder if it's possible to get flagged by talking about the First Lady, and the rumors that the only reason she married G.W.B. was because he not only got her pregnant, but also gave her herpes the first time they did the coke-fueled-frat-boy-one-pump-hump in the Skull N' Bones clubhouse coffin at Yale.

    Oh, and he's wealthy.

Look, I've been trying diligently to get flagged. If I haven't been yet, then ain't NONE OF US gonna be.

Months ago, I was talking to my mom on the phone after reading Gore Vidal's "Dreaming Oil" and kept telling her I hope she doesn't mind our conversation being recorded because once I said "Al Qaeda" and something like, oh, I don't remember, maybe "three foreign governments forewarned us in the summer of 2001 that we would be attacked, and exactly how we would be attacked, but nothing was done to prevent it." I can't remember my exact words. ;)

Then I started posting things in this forum (earning the tag "leftist lunatic" for which I'm proud; I mean, after all, there are no conspiracies in the United States of Amnesia, right?)

But it's not like I'm going to be paran---

What the hell was that sound?

Yep, Its amazing how much scrutinization Freedom of Speech can get you in.

But, Luckily I have only been detained at an airport checkpoint once since 9-11 and I travel A lot. And surprisingly this was on a nonstop flight from DC to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Every other person on the flight was Arab/Muslim. Heck I'm only half Arab, and look more mexican than I do Arab... O well.

Though I doubt I have been flagged, especially since I dont think they flag minors. Or do they?

    Uh, what he said.
It's absurd that this could even be a topic, but the thought crossed my mind as well. I'm just a Democrat who thinks Bush, Jr. is the worst President of modern times. I can't see how that could be anything else but normal and as American as apple pie.

Thing is, bulletin boards cannot be spidered well, particularly one's that require membership to view the forums. I'm guessing a basketball BBS isn't high on the government's list of priorities.

How high does it have to be? How long is the list?

Things like Watergate, Iran-Contra, McCarthyism etc. must seem like fairy tales to you.

Finished with my woman 'cause she couldn't help me with my mind
people think I'm insane because I am frowning all the time

All day long I think of things but nothing seems to satisfy
Think I'll lose my mind if I don't find something to pacify

Can you help me occupy my brain?
    Oh yeah

I need someone to show me the things in life that I can't find
I can't see the things that make true happiness, I must be blind

Make a joke and I will sigh and you will laugh and I will cry
Happiness I cannot feel and love to me us so unreal

And so as you hear these words telling you now of my state
I tell you to enjoy life I wish I could but it's too late

I've seen on newsgroups where people put a list of hudreds of words in their signatures. The words are all "hit list" words that the FBI and NSA scan for.

I guess they do it as a rebellious gesture.

For the record, I'm not working on any campaign now... though my wife is. I did do some stuff in the past... I guess if they want to flag me for working on the radical campaign that was Paul Simon's or the Bolshevik Dem Congressmen I helped, I'll take that as a compliment.

On a related note, I'm sure I'm flagged on some air passenger database.

Also, maybe we lefties should all be nicer to some of the righties around here... if things keep going the way they are, you never can tell who might end up being our camp commandant.
