    Which of these are lies?

    \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

As you walk up the steps to the Capitol Building which houses the Supreme Court, you can see near the top of the building a row of the world's law givers and each one is facing one in the middle who is facing forward with a full frontal view - it is Moses and the Ten Commandments!

    ****************************************************

As you enter the Supreme Court courtroom, the two huge oak doors have the Ten Commandments engraved on each lower portion of each door. As you sit inside the courtroom, you can see the wall, right above where the Supreme Court judges sit...
a display of the Ten Commandments!

    ****************************************************

There are Bible verses etched in stone all over the Federal Buildings and Monuments in Washington, DC. James Madison, the fourth president, known as "The Father of Our Constitution" made the following statement: "We have staked the whole of all our political institutions upon the capacity of mankind for self-government, upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God."

    ****************************************************

Patrick Henry, that patriot and Founding Father of our country said, "It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists but by Christians,
not on religions but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ."

    ****************************************************

Every session of Congress begins with a prayer by a paid preacher, whose salary has been paid by the taxpayer since 1777.

    ****************************************************

Fifty-two of the 55 founders of the Constitution were members of the established orthodox churches in the colonies.

    ****************************************************

Thomas Jefferson worried that the Courts would overstep their authority and instead of interpreting the law, would begin making law ... an oligarchy--- THE RULE OF FEW OVER MANY.

    ****************************************************

The very first Supreme Court Justice, John Jay, said: "Americans should select AND prefer Christians as their rulers."

    ****************************************************

How, then, have we gotten to the point that everything we have done for 220 years in this country is NOW - suddenly wrong and unconstitutional?

    \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Have we gotten wise or what?

    Which of these are lies?

Don't know about the rest of it, but the first sentence is a lie... Doesn't give me much reason to trust the rest of it, now does it?

<I>As you walk up the steps to the Capitol Building which houses the Supreme Court </I>

The Supreme Court is not in the Capitol...

That is an amazingly closed-minded attitude about someone who made an error. I'm glad you're so perfect!

Actually, if you go to Snopes, you will learn that almost all of these are false. Some samples:

    <I>
Patrick Henry, that patriot and Founding Father of our country said, "It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists but by Christians . . . not on religions but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ".

<B>Another spurious quotation. These words appear nowhere in the writings or recorded utterances of Patrick Henry. </B>

As you walk up the steps to the Capitol Building which houses the Supreme Court you can see near the top of the building a row of the world's law givers and each one is facing one in the middle who is facing forward with a full frontal view — it is Moses and the Ten Commandments!

<B>The two representations of Moses which adorn the Supreme Court building both present him in a context in which he is depicted as merely one of several historical exemplars of lawgivers, not as a religious figure.</B>

As you enter the Supreme Court courtroom, the two huge oak doors have the Ten Commandments engraved on each lower portion of each door.

<B>The doors of the Supreme Court courtroom don't literally have the "Ten Commandments engraved on each lower portion" — the lower portions of the two doors are engraved with a symbolic depiction, two tablets bearing only the Roman numerals I through V and VI through X. As discussed in the next item, these symbols can represent something other than the Ten Commandments.
    </B>

As you sit inside the courtroom, you can see the wall right above where the Supreme Court judges sit a display of the Ten Commandments!

<B>According to Weinman, the designer of this frieze, the tablet visible between the two central male figures, engraved with the Roman numerals I through X, represents not the Ten Commandments but the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution, collectively known as the Bill of Rights. </B>
    </I>

    There's more at:

    http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/capital.asp

But hey, you just posted this without any intent, right? You're just relaying information you received, because you thought it was interesting, nevermind totally inaccurate, right?

Oh for f-ks sake, you posted yet another r****ded right wing chain email full of dog crap, you challenge people on it, and you get all pissy with it when it was shown to have contained a mistake that your average fifth grade student wouldn't have made in the very first sentence. Stop whining chica.

Now, I will gladly let you get in your pathological last word now and hope that you get whatever attention you seek to receive from this thread that you don't receive in your daily life. Good luck!

That is an amazingly closed-minded attitude about someone who made an error.

You really should learn the difference between "error" and "intent to distort". It would really help you to reconsider before you post these dumbass forwarded emails.

He obviously did this on purpose to get attention, or at least will claim such afterwards, sort of like the D&D version of YoYao.

    Good show, it worked.

    It was a question.

If I wanted to challenge you, I would start out something like this: "Hey, pie-holes, which of these are lies?"

It's easy to look things up on Snopes; I don't care to be a slave to that.

Discuss or go away. Your choice. :)

BTW, I checked and the Supreme Court building is a long block and a half away from the Capitol-- FWIW.

What absolute authority is Snopes? I read the stuff and found some pretty tentative stuff... "could be" etc.

A guy in Mosaic Robes holding tablets with Roman Numbers 1-10 and it's some ancient guy holding up the Bill of Rights?!?!?! That's goofy. Whose agenda is that? the designer?

I'm not sure at all what final authority Snopes is....

My daughter and I have this little verbal game we play. One time while we were waiting in a line, she let out this exasperated "Oh, I give up!" We about laughed till the corners of our mouths cracked.

Now it's a game. She lets out a "Oh, I give up..." and my obligatory response is "Never, never, never give up!" while I am tickling her. Yeah, I am stubborn. I will get to the bottom of things. I just don't accept things. Hell, you all accept Snopes more than I accept the original piece. How reliable is Snopes?

I wish you guys would get past your self-congratulatory "giddyup is gullible" charade. I post this stuff to find out about it and to provoke discussion. I'm not nearly as dumb as you think I am... :D

Gotta go to a funeral... I'm out!

giddy, I honestly do not think you are dumb at all, and I mean that. I poke fun because I know you're a good sport and these threads do have an amusing sort of history. Sorry you're attending a funeral today.

Who's agenda? How about the guy that CREATED the thing?

<I>According to Weinman, <B>the designer of this frieze</B>, the tablet visible between the two central male figures, engraved with the Roman numerals I through X, represents not the Ten Commandments but the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution, collectively known as the Bill of Rights.

Dude, quit digging yourself into a deeper and deeper hole. Or, just admit you're not interested in truth, but instead in trying to justify your own argument with incorrect and distorted facts.

I post this stuff to find out about it and to provoke discussion.

You post blatantly incorrect facts in order to promote discussion? It that's true, then this is not:

I'm not nearly as dumb as you think I am...

It says that Moses is in one of the depictions, along with several other lawgivers.

I guess people believe snopes because he offers cites to where he got the information and researches things. The site has not been 100% correct all the time, but the overall batting average is very high. If you don't believe snopes, you're more than welcome to check his sources (most of which are listed on the page with the legend) yourself. At the very least, though, snopes has put more effort into getting to the bottom of things that a person who simply passes along an email without questioning the contents.
