WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Senate voted Monday to establish a federal boxing commission that would seek to ensure the integrity and improve the tarnished image of the sport. The commission would establish standards for issuing licenses to boxers and managers and take steps to protect boxer health and safety. The measure, approved on a voice vote, would set up a national computerized medical registry of boxing personnel and would provide uniform ranking criteria and contractual guidelines. The bill, which still must be considered by the House, is sponsored by Sen. John McCain of Arizona, a boxing fan who has long tried to clean up the sport by better protecting the health of boxers and ensuring fair financial treatment for them. The three-person U.S. Boxing Commission would be appointed by the president and function within the Commerce Department. The legislation, amending a 1996 boxing safety act, includes such provisions as requiring the continuous presence of an ambulance and emergency medical personnel during any match. It would bar a promoter from arranging a match unless all participating judges and referees are approved by the USBC. In House hearings last March, the International Boxing Federation and the World Boxing Association weighed in against a federal commission, but indicated they do support national medical standards. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/more/05/09/bc.box.federalcommissio.ap/
The only problem I have with this bill is that it has no standards for issuing licenses to promotors, though it does for boxers and managers. That's somewhat strange. I guess Don King won't be going away any time soon.
And, of course, the country is clamoring for action on this very important issue that affects all Americans.
With MLB and boxing now addressed, i think it's high time the senate get involved with the NHL bargaining process. And they really should do something about Reality TV. I think there's some behind the scenes stuff with the Amazing Race, that we're not seeing.
Definitely! Boxing was once 1 of the 2 main sports in America, other than baseball. However, the implentation of PPV and bouts mostly on HBO and Showtime, which are premium cable, has led to the downfall of this great sport. Not to mention the corruption that exists (hint hint Don King). Hopefully with this bill, boxing can be cleaned up and once again be a somewhat respectable sport.
I know you are but what am I? no...wait.... thegary name the time and place. I've been hankering for a Cyclones game!
mc mark, the cyclones don't start up 'til june 21. anywho, i just had my travel plans pushed back 'til tomorrow. could do a drink after work. otherwise, next week should be open.
In another low blow for boxing, James "Lights Out" Toney was caught using steroids in his heavyweight title fight on April 30. "According to the Fight Fax web site’s suspension list, James “Lights Out” Toney has been suspended for 90 days and fined $10,000 for testing positive for a banned substance. In addition, and perhaps more importantly, his April 30 WBA title-winning victory over John Ruiz has been changed to a No Decision. While the implications of this decision are not known, the most likely scenario will see the title returned to Ruiz outright. Toney will apparently be re-tested after his 90-day suspension is served." This is an update to the previous story: Newly crowned WBA heavyweight champion James Toney has reportedly tested positive for an anabolic steroid in a post-fight drug test. According to longtime boxing writer Wallace Matthews of Newsday, Toney's promoter Dan Goossen was informed Monday night by the New York State Athletic Commission that Toney had "tested positive for a banned substance that is not a narcotic." The paper quotes another source as saying the substance was nandrolone. If this report is accurate, the bout would be declared a no contest, and John Ruiz, who came out of retirement yesterday, would stand to regain his former WBA crown. Toney's attorney Nicholas Kahn suggested that Toney may have been prescribed something he didn't know was illegal by his personal physician. http://www.fightnews.com FYI the steroid that showed up on the test is nandrolone
u meant to say one of the two main sports other than baseball, football, basketball, hockey, golf and trivial pursuit?
So mc mark, Have you gotten anything by System of a Down yet? I was a little surprised that you would be interested in them as they didn't seem like your type of music. I got their self-titled one awhile back and I never could get into it. That genre - "nu-metal", I guess is what you call it, is one that I just think is noise with Korn, Godsmack, Linkin Park, etc. But I may have to give SOAD another chance if you wound up liking them.
