As per normal lock if already posted. only a little bit on carl Landry as per below. Carl Landry, Houston: Landry has already made an impact as a role player during his first two seasons, but the stage may now be set for him to become one of the Rockets' leaders. Ron Artest is gone to the Lakers and Yao Ming is out with a foot injury, removing two cornerstones of one of the NBA's best defenses last season. Landry is a nails-tough power forward who possesses the size to defend on the block and help out on the glass, and the footwork to capably pick up guards off switches. His toughness and versatility could help fill the void left by Yao and Artest. Read more: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/20...cret.weapons/index.html?eref=T1#ixzz0RPGYbdR4
Seems like everyone is getting hyped up to be a leader on this team. Brooks, Landry, Scola, Battier, Tmac, Lowry. Landry can be a big part of team and am eager to see how much he's improved. Regardless, I hope all of our players have improved in different facets of the game because we will need a combined team effort to have a successful season.
lolwut. landry was probably our weakest link defensively last year (other than maybe aaron). he's average at best in that area. analysis from national publications these days basically consists of throwing darts to pick a player and then regurgitating likely apt cliches and qualities in the place of actual observation.
I forgot about Wafer. Tracy wasn't part of the team and Scola is a better defender than Carl. Scola is average but he doesn't get lost in rotations as easily as Carl does. The main point is that the article describes him as a nails tough power forward "with the size to defend on the block" - funny because that's his biggest weakness. Landry gets absolutely raped inside by full grown power forwards and does not have anywhere near the size or strength to defend on the block. Sticking with the theme, they would have been better off just saying something safe such as the likelihood of his scoring opportunities increasing with Yao gone rather than just trying to throw something up against the wall about his defense and hoping no one actually paying attention notices.
Carl isn't a terrible defender. It seems that he can be a better defender than he is right now. Physically, he's similar to Chuck Hayes. Carl's an undersized power forward, but I would say he's still pretty strong, and he's athletic. I think there's just some post defensive principles he hasn't picked up yet. He really struggled against Aldridge and Gasol in the playoffs. Hopefully he's learning some stuff from Chuck Hayes.
Physically similar to Hayes? Don't really see it. Carl is very athletic, Chuck doesn't really jump off the gym. Chuck is rock solid and doesn't get back done, while one of Carl's biggest weakness is his inability to hold onto his man. I still remember Morey saying Carl has the potential to be the top 10 PF in the league.... I wonder if he still thinks that way.
Size and strength-wise they should be pretty similar. It's knowing what to do with your size and strength that makes you a good post defender. There's no doubt Carl has the potential to be a good defender, could be better than Scola.
Physically, he couldn't be any less similar to Chuck Hayes. About the only thing the two have in common is that they are both short. Chuck Hayes has one of the most solid lower bodies in the entire league. There isn't a guy in the league except for Shaq who can back him down. On the other hand, just about any full sized power forward can back down Landry and have his way with him in the post. Carl's great physical attribute is his athleticism and leaping ability, something Chuck Hayes possesses none of. And of course in terms of fundamentals, I'm sure we both agree that they are worlds apart. Chuck Hayes is one of the most defensively fundamentally sound big men in basketball while Landry is still learning some of the basics.
One thing that I like about landry is that it seems like everytime he tries to score he does....Not saying he's a scoring machine or anything, but it seems like landry's jumper was automatic, and anything around the basket was good as in....You cant really remember lot of landrys misses, or times he made a terrible offensive play....now his defense, is different...
He's not our secret weapon, all Rockets fan know what he can do, I guess they just dont. I think you can look at someone like Pops, Taylor or Budinger as our secret weapon, maybe even Dorsey.
Size? Landry has the edge because of his decent wing-span. Strength-wise? Really? Chuck Hayes >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Carl Landry. One of the few reasons why Hayes is special is his strength. Carl is strong, I'm sure, but compare to Chuck? Nothing.
Carl Landry's switching defense is very poor. I agree that Carl Landry may have a breakout season with more opportunities, but I doubt he will fill the void defensively left by Yao and Mutombo.
Landry's wingspan and standing reach are below average to well below average for both a PF and someone his height : Average Measurements by Position: http://www.draftexpress.com/nba-pre-draft-measurements/?page=avepos&year=All Average Wingspan/Reach by Height: http://www.draftexpress.com/nba-pre-draft-measurements/?page=averages&year=All Carl Landry: http://www.draftexpress.com/nba-pre...age=&year=2007&sort2=DESC&draft=0&pos=0&sort= Landry's height w/out shoes is actually slightly above average for his position but since length is usually more significant than height, Landry is a little undersized for a PF. Believe it or not, based on wingspan and standing reach, Brooks' measurements are closer to those of the average PG than Landry's are to the average PF. On the other hand, Brooks is shorter and lighter than the average PG while Landry is taller and heavier/stronger than the average PF.
He'll probably remain backup to Scola or Anderson/Hayes, whoever we start at Center. Anyways, Carl needs to put a lot of work into his post game if he wants to see significant court time. He still only has that 15-18 foot jump shoot.
man, carl deserves every minute he's on the floor...scola plays that invisble defense also or fouls...its not like scola is bill russell on defense or anything..they guy gets in and produces
Landry is a great 6th man or backup power forward. If he ever wants to start, he needs Hayes defense and Scola's offense.
I think "nails-tough" does not begin to describe the toughness he has. The guy got shot in the leg and was back 2 weeks later.
