The Seattle SuperSonics and New York Knicks are close to completing a deal that would send All-NBA center Patrick Ewing to the Sonics for Vin Baker and other players. A source close to the situation told SportsLine.com that "it seems certain that it's done but there hasn't been total confirmation." The holdup, apparently, includes a number of factors. The Sonics first must sign free-agent forward Maurice Taylor to replace the 28-year-old Baker, and second, MUST AGREE TO AN EXTENSION WITH EWING, WHO IS IN THE LAST YEAR OF HIS CONTRACT. Further complicating matters are reports that it could ultimately be a four-team deal orchestrated by agent David Falk, who represents both Ewing and Taylor, plus Glen Rice of the Los Angeles Lakers. Some reports have Rice also going to the Knicks, with Christian Laettner going from the Detroit Pistons to the Lakers. "It's tough to get into any of that," the source told SportsLine.com. "The details are so confusing, all we can be sure of is Ewing and Baker at this point." And they are the keys. Ewing, who just turned 38 this month, has told the Knicks and everyone listening that he'd like to play two more seasons after this one, which pays him $14 million. He played in just 62 games last season and has played in only 126 of a possible 214 games the past three seasons due to wrist, Achilles tendon and knee maladies. Nonetheless, he did average 15.0 points, 9.7 rebounds and 1.2 blocks this past season for the Knicks compared to his Hall of Fame numbers of 22.8 points and 10.4 rebounds during his 15-year career. Baker has been more perplexing. Although reports have had him at 15 pounds lighter this summer on the way to the Olympics, he has been on a downward spiral since coming to the Sonics three years ago from Milwaukee in a deal that sent Shawn Kemp to Cleveland and Terrell Brandon to the Bucks. After two seasons averaging 21 points and 10 rebounds with the Bucks, he has stumbled with the Sonics. The past two seasons combined he has slipped all the way to 15.7 points and 7.2 rebounds. His weight gain and loss of muscle tone had been startling, with rampant rumors of a drinking problem that he fervently denied. But he had continual problems with Sonics coach Paul Westphal last season that culminated with him being benched late the final week of the season. Nonetheless, Dave Checketts, the president of Madison Square Garden, asked SportsLine.com about Baker last season when he made a West Coat trip with the Knicks, wondering aloud what had happened to Baker, who was an All-Star four consecutive seasons until 1998. As for the Sonics interest in Ewing, it takes them off the hook for the final six years and $77 million of Baker's contract, and they have the Hall of Fame body to at least battle with Shaquille O'Neal and the San Antonio Spurs duo of Tim Duncan and David Robinson. On the other hand, his failing body makes him tough to commit double-figure millions for two more seasons after this one ... as he has said he wants. "It's a gamble for the Sonics," an NBA source said. "But not a bad one. It wasn't working with Baker and Patrick is a classic Hall of Fame warrior. Why the hell would he give up himself for the Sonics if they're signing Ewing to a two year extension? It makes no sense. Somebody needs to make a flash of Falk playing 'choo-choo' train w/ Mo Taylor and telling him where he'll be playing next year.
