Martell Webster? I've never heard of the kid.

Here's a link to video of him in action: http://www.king5.com/perl/common/vi...ww.king5.com/ki_012505HSprep.wmv&props=SPORTS

Seattle Times: Top-ranked Seattle Prep holds off No. 2 O'Dea 56-54

09:32 AM PST on Wednesday, January 26, 2005

By Craig Smith / Seattle Times

SEATTLE - Typical Seattle Prep vs. O'Dea. The game was sold out two hours before tipoff, the walls sweated and the game came down to the final shot.

The shot by O'Dea's Edwin Dixon didn't go in, and top-ranked Seattle Prep escaped with 56-54 Metro League Mountain Division boys basketball victory over No. 2 O'Dea last night.

Martell Webster scored 30 points to lead the Panthers (15-2 overall, 13-0 Metro Mountain), but this game was anything but easy.

"My heart was pounding," Webster said of O'Dea's final possession.

Sophomore Jamelle McMillan, son of Sonics coach Nate McMillan, passed up an open three-point shot on the Irish's final sequence, then passed inside to Dixon. The junior guard's 10-foot shot missed.

Webster expected McMillan to take the three-pointer, but McMillan said, "Coach told us we don't need a three."

Prep's 6-foot-11 junior Spencer Hawes said, "This game had everything. You had fans, you had intensity, you had a game that came down to the last shot. That's what you live for in these rivalries — to have games as competitive as possible. That's what I love about them. There's nothing better than a Prep-O'Dea game."

Indeed, the series is reaching Garfield-Franklin status on the prep juice-o-meter.

Webster, a 6-6 guard, was a prime attraction and he didn't disappoint in front the audience that included a Houston Rockets scout. Half of his points came on five silky three-pointers and he also grabbed nine rebounds.

Martell Webster of Seattle Prep dunks over Jamelle McMillan of O'Dea. Webster finished with 30 points.

Hawes, who has averaged 17.3 points, was held to eight points but grabbed 11 rebounds. Jordan Bremond scored 12 for Seattle Prep.

Stanford-bound Mitch Johnson led O'Dea (14-3, 11-2) with 22 points, scoring 10 in his team's final-quarter comeback. Michael Duty scored 12 for the defending Class 3A state champions.

With Webster scoring 10 points in the third quarter, Prep built a 41-31 lead late but watched it melt like snow on Snoqualmie Pass.

O'Dea took its only lead at 54-53 with 2:14 left in the game on a field goal and free throw by Johnson, who hit winning shot in overtime eight days ago in O'Dea's dramatic win over Rainier Beach.

Two free throws by Washington-bound Webster helped the Panthers regain the lead with 1:24 to go. Jordan Wheeler scored the final point by hitting 1 of 2 free throws with 38 seconds left.

Prep's biggest problem was 22 turnovers. Seattle Prep coach Michael Kelly wasn't happy with that stat, but did like was the team's defensive hustle.

"It felt like we made it difficult for them," Kelly said. "There weren't too many easy baskets for them."

Fans started lining up at 3 o'clock for the 7:30 game. Doors opened at 5 p.m., and the game was sold out by 5:25, with an estimated 250 fans turned away. The gym's capacity is only 957, and before the first half of the junior-varsity game won by O'Dea was over, the walls were sweating from the humidity.

O'Dea had reeled off nine straight victories since losing to Seattle Prep 60-56 Dec. 14 at O'Dea. Prep's only defeats were to two national powers at a holiday tournament in Florida.

The Panthers and Irish could face each other three more times — at the Metro League, Sea-King District and 3A state tournaments.

If the teams meet again, Johnson knows what has to change.

"For some reason, we keep playing with our backs against the wall," said the son of former Sonic Johnny Johnson. "They are a great team. They put four quarters together and we didn't."

Rockets scouts need to start working to earn that paycheck. Mavericks and Spurs know how to find gems among garbage, while Rockets turn gems into garbage.

It would be hilarious to draft some Seattle kid out of high school after letting Rashard go to the Sonics.

I fail to see how this is relevant to the topic of this thread. We are talking about this particular guard and why the Rockets might be interested. If you want to gripe about the scouts' results vs other teams, start your own thread instead of derailing this one.

Now, back to the TOPIC at hand. It seems this kid is already committed to UW unless he's a lottery pick. If found a little scouting report from nbadraft, but it looks to be 2 years old

I was thinking maybe the scout was up there to scout the Sonics and decided just to drop by and check out this kid. But it turns out the Sonics are out of town all week so they must have made a special trip to Seattle just to see him.

Are there any college studs in the area as well?

The day Rockets scouts can find gems like Parker, Ginobli, Beno, Josh Howard, M Daniel, instead of Charlie Ward/Strickland.

I still cannot believe my eyes when I saw Strickland playing 16 minutes and throwing 7 bricks. None of them are even close to the basket. It was embarrasing. Among all the basketball talents in the world, Strickland is the best we could come up with? And you are telling me the scouts are doing their job? LOL!

Rocket scouts have nothing to do with Charlie Ward or Strickland. Stop hijacking this thread so you can complain about something totally unrelated.

I would doubt a special trip was made, but it is a good find nonetheless.

Right. Plus, Badiane and Spanoulis could very well turn into good NBA players.

Although I am not from the area, I would think that heavily scouting local product Gerald Green would make a lot of sense.

probably the opposite. after the rox-raptors game about a month ago, i did a little business w/ the heats' director of player personnel. he said he came down to watch a high school kid (forget what his name is), and went to the rox game just for fun (although i'm sure he was taking notes).

but that's just my personal experience, so who knows...

I don't think it's that old. He just finished his junior season, correct? Or did he finish his senior season and they are projecting him to go numebr 6 in 2006 after one year of college somewhere?

I think Othella has been a forgotten man on this forum. He is a solid NBA player. He's been on a # of teams with a glut at PF...and they always want to go with the younger guys, so he doesn't get his time. But he's a scoring machine in the post, and a decent rebounder. I'd take him over any PF we have right now.

(only mention it here because anytime people bring up our past draft mistakes/good picks, no one ever thinks of him as a great 2nd rnder, and a good overall pick)

There's a lot more than three guys to point to over the history of the franchise.

I wish you would all become Jazz fans so I can feel justified in my disregard.

I'm glad that our scouts are pro-active in scouting young tallent. I mean... "do something to earn their paycheck"?!? It sounds to me that's exactly what this guy was doing.

Probably visiting a local bar or two also... but hey! Wouldn't you:!

lancet, you have no clue what you are talking about.

Just because the Spurs and Mavs have recently found some good players at low picks it means they always do it? Look at their history before then.

The Spurs have Parker and Manu and that was recently. Duncan was a no brainer like say, Yao? Robinson another, like say Hakeem. Apply your argument to the time we had Sam and Horry. What kind of guys did the Spurs and Mavs have back then with similar picks?

Are you saying Rockets scouts have NOTHING to do with Ward/Strickland signing? Can you tell me what do Rockets scouts do for their jobs then? They contribute nothing in finding player to sign. Is that you every scout does their job?
