I am looking into buying a PDA. I am currently looking at the Dell Axim X51v and the Palm TX. The HP HX2795 is nice too, but a little more than I want to spend. Anyone own one of these models? Also, if anyone has a suggestion on another PDA in the market, then please let me know.
Sounds like your looking for a higher end PDA than this, but Palm has a 99 dollar one called the Palm Z22. It's very ipod like and has quite a lot of features for the price.
I bought the Axim x50 a year ago. As far as horsepower and screen resolution go, it was fantastic. I ended up being very frustrated with the PocketPC OS. The normal PIM functions (isn't that what a PDA should be for?) were really pretty disappointing out of the box. You need third- party software to get good PIM management. The screen can fit a lot of text tho. I eventually returned it- it just wasn't that user-friendly. The handwriting recognition wasn't that great- the simple task of inputting text wasn't very easy. Single hand operation for doing basic tasks was not so hot either. I needed something I could pull out of my pocket at any time and take notes, jot stuff down, make appoinments, etc. This wasn't it. For audio/video/games, it'll be pretty awesome because it has the processor and the screen. This month I got a Treo 650 and I am really digging it. Now I can use the keyboard to put stuff in. The Palm OS is way easier and faster to use for basic, important tasks. A bigger screen would be better to view more information, but I wouldn't want the phone to be any bigger. They made single-hand operation a breeze. If you want to use a PDA as an organizer, I recommend getting a palm. If you're looking for something to use as a small computer, get the pocketPC.
Psst... Nolen... the latest Palm is a Windows platform. I was looking to get the 700w phone, but it's starting to get less-than-stellar reviews from what I've seen. I'm going to wait and see. The reason I didn't get a 650 was because it got bad reviews or too many mixed reviews. So here I sit waiting for the perfect PDA phone... I'm still looking at the Treo 700w, Samsung SCH-i730, and the Verizon Wireless XV6700. I just wish they'd come down a bit in price...
damn... just got off of work and here i am replying to this stuff (btw, the 650 sucks donkey balls). the phones that dod named off are all of the best pocket pcs/pdas out there. if your looks strickly for the win mobile operating system, i rate them... 1. treo 700w 2. xv6700 3. i730 if your looking for a good deal, you may want to think of the blackberry 7130e. i see it's the same price as the treo 650 (suprised about this, btw). broadband speeds (400 to 700 kb), but either in houston or dallas you'll have burst way above that. you can use it as a tethered conn for a laptop either usb or bluetooth (sucks that you have to pay an extra 15/mon for it). keyboard w/the suretype function also sucks to previous bb's, though it's only about a week's learning curve to it's predecessors (sp?). also what's bad is the actual case on the phone. it's almost nokia material (just don't drop the f'er or you're screwed). another bad thing... there's no sd card slot for extra storage. again, it's only 299. still a good deal. blackberry desktop manager to sync personal info and blackberry internet service for wireless email sync. back to the other three... working with these three all the time, i have really have no preference. the only reason that the i730 is third is because it's win mobile 4. no bugs, no nuthin' as far as physical functionality are concerned. well... a patch was just release for some "so called" bugs with the phone, but i haven't encountered anything w/personal use... just more of an inconvenience than anything else (eg: "click here and here and here to get to here" as opposed to "click here to get to here"). bad arse phone, stylish, etc. the xv6700 and the treo 700w are essentially the same phone. both win mobile 5. more mem, more talk time. microsoft still didn't clear up the fact that when you "close out a program" that you really didn't "close it out". there's a shortcut they added to reduce the keystrokes to close out all active programs, but it's still annoying. if you notice the phones running sluggish, that's probably the reason why. make sure if you get any one of these two to also get a storage card for it (any apps that you dl, make sure that they can be dl'ed to the card instead of the phone... google search the f'ers to make sure the apps are reliable though. can't emphasize that enough.) another bad thing is that win mobile 5 phones don't have a backup prog on them like win mobile 4, but i hear that it is downloadable though. the main thing with all of the windows phones with verizon wireless is getting the f'er set up. activesync (calendar, memos, contacts, and tasks) and wireless sync (email synchronization) and getting the two to work together. they're basically duplicates, but one is better than the other at one thing and vice versa, so it works better to use both. be lazy and call for help for initial setup... it'll pay off (or check out palm's message board. a lot of the so-called problems with the phone are actual settings that you need to configure). i change my mind on the top three though... 1. 6700 (essentially the same as 700w, but lower price. also lower than the older i730), waaay bigger keyboard w/ landscape or portrait screen view). looks like a brick though. 2. i730 (older software, but still does what it's supposed to do. best looking phone out there). 3. treo 700w (expensive. no different than 6700 other than better looking).
you already have a creative zen vision no? doesn't that thing sync up with Outlook? Why yes it does. Why spend the extra money? If you REALLY need a PDA, think about a smart phone. I love my blackberry cause i can email and do outlook. The Treos are nice as well. Since you're a consultant, you're probably an outlook w**** anyways, so it would be nice to have a phone that syncs automatically without docking.
This model is good. It has the right balance of features and pricing. Pocket PCs are like mini-computers which are feature rich and expensive. If you're going to do serious work you might as well upgrade to a notebook. Personally, I've got an E2 and I've got no complaints other than maybe it should come with a bigger internal memory or a novelty like a voice recorder or a camera. I will add an SD card to increase capacity. The other two I can live without. I can't wait to try the software CD I've ordered for the E2 with hundred of programs.
I just bought the UT Starcom 6700 phone from Sprint, which is named PPC-6700. It runs Windows Mobile 5.0, is small but still has a decent size screen. I moved from T-Mobile and had the HP 6315 IPAQ phone. That was decent too but the screen cracked. In general I like the Pocket PC phones. I can easily use Outlook and play games like poker on it. I can use Voice Command from Microsoft which allows me to dial anyone in my Contacts list using my voice, without training. Why I went to Sprint is because I surf the web at 400kbps to 1Mbps and I can also use my phone as a modem so I can hook my laptop to it via bluetooth. Very useful all around.
