Microsoft introduced a new search engine, Bing.com, to replace live.com. Bing will launch on June 3rd. More information can be found here:

It looks like Bing will mainly focus on searches regarding shopping, restaurants, travel plans, etc. I've found Google to be incredibly convenient for looking for general information, but severely lacking in online comparison shopping, looking for restaurant choices and ratings, etc. I thought Microsoft has found a niche in the search engine market, and I will be testing it out when it launches. Also, the name is funny :D

    What do you guys think?

I've been following this news for the past few days and all I can say is... big deal. I'm over search engines. I use Google and somebody's going to have to re-think the whole search engine idea and introduce something unique or far better for me to switch. I guess they want everybody to say "Bing it!" :D

Just take over Yahoo or go into a deal with them to put that company out of its misery - that's all I ask of Microsoft right now... ok, that and lower the price on your MSDN subscriptions...

    Interesting.

Wolfram|Alpha is awesome. Where else would you go if you wanted to find out how long a plane ride from Timbuktu to Nacogdoches is?

I agree. Wolfram at least seems unique. I watched the Bing video - seems like it doesn't do anything special.

it's going to have to be better than google's for me to switch. why switch when i'm already comfortable with google?

Well, I made the switch to google when I couldn't find something in yahoo, but could in google.

So I guess it's going to be the same case here. If Bing can find stuff that I can't get from google, I'll change my preference.

Bing doesn't revolutionize anything from what I saw in video but I will try it once it goes public. Now Wolfram has the potential to become tremendous because of the way it organizes and displays information. I typed the word "google" into it and got back whole history of the company including stock price, charts, financial statements all nicely packaged in a neat interface. Again cannot stress how the layout and interface play an important role in web design. 5 years ago MSN and Yahoo were a sore to look at and still cause me lose focus every time I visit. Google's simple design and accurate display of search results is what drew most people to it.

Pretty much how I feel. Not much point in trying to play 'catch up'.

hulu.com is having a "bing-a-thon" on June 8th... Couldn't help but see it advertised on the Conan reruns.

QFT. Seems this is just sour grapes from M$ over the yahoo thing.

Indeed, usually for them to do something special they have to buy it or steal ideas.

I wonder which tech compan(ies) we'll be bailing out 70 years from now, and which Chinese or Indian operating system will finally pass Windows.
