What is going on with the Rockets' offense? first 22 games - 86.8 points per game Record: 10-12 last 12 games - 100.3 points per game Record 7-5 It seems like we see extended flashes of brilliance on both sides of the court...if we could just keep the offense cruising at its current pace and pick up the defense. I did notice that T-Mac was leading scorer in 11 of the last 12 games whereas during the first 22 games, it was mingled between Yao, T-Mac, and Jim Jackson. Whatever they're doing, it seems like the team is figuring out how to play together. edit: Defensive points per game first 22 games - 88.5 points per game last 12 games - 95.3 points per game
lol man i thought you were gonna say something bad about our offense. Well Tmac can really take over games. And I think we're developing more chemistry. Yao is being more involved in the offense in a better more productive useful way. Sura is scoring..so is Wesley and Barry. Juwan also. MO sometimes. Barrett decent and Padgett can make some 3's. Ryan Bowen can't score but he's nice to have. I think it has to do with us playing more uptempo and attacking the basket and taking open shots on the run instead of doing the 20 second execution thing every single time...our offense is more free now i guess. i hope we can keep it up. and make the playoffs
Yeah, I don't care what Van Gundy says about not changing. He has loosened up on the offensive and and let TMac go off. That's why our numbers are up. If Francis would have been allowed to come down the floor and take a jumper with 20 seconds left on the shot clock, our offensive numbers would have been better last year also. Van Gundy has modified his offensive style in the last 12 games to let TMac freeflow. And I think we will continue to improve on the offensive end and TMac and Yao will figure it out and get even better if Van Gundy doesn't try to control every dribble and every pass and just let their natural talents take over. Yao and TMac do have chemistry and it is in it's infancy. All they need with them on the offensive end is 2 fantastic 3 point shooters and a big time offensive rebound banger who can knock down the 15 footer. The defense is another problem altogether right now though. This is Van Gundy's job, to make the defense work. Let's hope that he can do what he is paid to do.
I think JFG will have the defense improve. That's his specialty basically. I am very glad about the 2 trades. They have improved the chemistry and speed of the team as has been mentioned above. It is FUN to watch the Rockets on offense now. T-mac is great. Bob Sura hustles on every play. Normally Barry/Weslay play in a smart fashion (save for a few plays near the end of the 1st period yesterday - lol.)
I want Rockets to practice half-court offense on road and running game at home. After all, playoffs are always dominated by half-court teams.
its because we got rid of Boki, he was a real cancer in the locker room, always making fun of his teammates' mothers.
You're correct!! Defensive points per game first 22 games - 88.5 points per game last 12 games - 95.3 points per game
JVG has allowed the players to run more, PG's are pushing it up much more. Using less time with our possessions allows us to have more possessions. That means we have more chances of scoring. More touches=more pts.
TO are down since the JJ trade i would think.......loved JJ but damn he turned the ball over way too much.....
He wasn't a ball-handler but was forced to play the 2 position. David Wesley and Jon Barry are much better suited for those duties. We now have more guys who can penetrate and run the break and create easy shots. Before the trades we lumbered down the court. I think that's the main thing.
You guys crack me up sometimes.......JVG has "ALWAYS" wanted his PG to push the ball upcourt... Its pretty simple really.......WE ARE MAKING OUR SHOTS!!! We shot like over 50% in the game last night. Do that consistently and you will win most of your games.....lol
Yes, JVG has always wanted his PGs to push the ball upcourt. And then run a 22 second play that winds up with a jump shot at the end of it, hopefully by one of the better shooters who is wide open because this brilliantly designed play by Van Gundy worked. Van Gundy has not been an advocate of us bringing the ball up the floor and taking it to the rack or taking a quick shot in transition. That is why Francis got so frustrated. Why run the ball up the floor only to set up in some kind of offensive set and throw the ball around 39 times before you get off a shot? The purpose of running and pushing the ball is to look for advantages and mismatches that are brought about because of the faster tempo and the fact that defensive players may not get back or when they get back they are out of position or mismatched against the wrong player. Now, that is changing whether Van Gundy wants to acknowledge it or not. Van Gundy has taken the shackles off of TMac and let him just gun it when he feels it. Hence you see TMac firing up a 30 footer with maybe 5 seconds off the shotclock in the Nuggets game. Does anyone really think that is the way that Van Gundy wants our offense to run ideally, TMac launching from 30 with 20 seconds left in the shot clock? Does anyone really think that kind of basketball makes Van Gundy happy? No, but he is bearing with it. I really think that in the meeting with TMac and Van Gundy they came to a meeting of the minds. Van Gundy took his hands off a lot of the offense and TMac commited to working harder and being a leader on the defensive end, plain and simple. Since that meeting we have had more offensive freedom, spontaneity, and break. And TMac has stepped up his defensive intensity and leadership. And we are making our shots because they are coming in a flow, and players aren't looking over their shoulder for Van Gundy's approval and direction over every step, dribble, pass, and shot.
Finally, someone else recognizes this. Since he started here he has always encourage the team to push the ball up the court, but for some reason the players have not been able to. Now we have Barry, Sura, Wesley and Barret who all like to run. SF was never a player that wanted to push the ball up the court.
There is no other way to explain it other than Wesley. He has totally, sucked so it makes no logical sense whatsoever, but he's the reason and there is no other. Perhaps now we push the ball because of David. Who knows. We've become quicker. And that favors athletic talent I guess. But who knows. But there is no doubt, when Wesley arrived we began to score a whole lot more.
