The Rockets have won every game in the last ten where they've scored 100 or better. They've lost every game in the last ten ten where they failed to get to 100 points. Amazingly they've actually gotten to 100 points in seven of the last ten games. I don't remember many stretches under JvG with that kind of scoring.
if gundy was still coaching here we would be talking about how we held 8 out of the last 10 opponents UNDER 100. as it turns out, the offense and the defense have been pretty good. but still much room for improvement.
Nothing to see here ... ever since the start of JVG's tenure in Houston, the Rockets have had a spectacular winning record in games in which they score above 100 points. I can't remember what it is but I'm pretty sure it's much higher than 80%.
Those games must of been horrible to watch. I really don't care how many points we score as long as we win, but these last few high scoring games have been exciting.
point differential has increased over the past 10 games while the points against has increased it shows that the offense is getting better and the defense is still solid to be comfortable our point differential needs to be closer to 8 instead of 4 top three teams in point differebntial last i looked was (in order) lakers cavaliers celtics
We do well when we keep the other team's scoring down and when we hit our shots... But I guess you could say that about any team, lol. Just focus on our good D, and take better shots. That is the key to every one of our games.
I skimmed through the game logs and came up with this... 2008/9: 8 - 0 (1.000) 2007/8: 28 - 4 (.875) 2006/7: 29 - 3 (.906) 2005/6: 17 - 3 (.850) 2004/5: 22 - 5 (.815) 2003/4: 14 - 1 (.933) Overall: 118 - 16 (.881) Van Gundy: 82 - 12 (.872) Adelman: 36 - 4 (.900) And we've only lost 5 games at home during that entire stretch when scoring 100+.
our offense will be fine because we have better players. it's only a matter of time. if we have championship aspirations, we gotta go back to the basics: dominant defense and rebounding (something we haven't shown consistently this year). the celtics painted a perfect recipe. kobe said on ESPN recently what wins championships. when you have better players like we do, offense is not going to be a problem (it'll get better). we gotta go back to making it tough for teams to get 90 on us and outrebound most of the games.
This "scoring surge" is all thanks to Yao getting more touches now that T-Mac is out, he draws the double teams and when he kicks the ball out, people are actually making shots or reposting and getting a layup and/or to the free throw line
Our ball movement could still be better, I still see alot of ISO plays and players holding to the ball too long (ahem* Ron Artest). Watching the Lakers ball movement and comparing to ours is almost night and day at times. (hold off the "that's why they're 17-2" comments, otherwise a pre-emptive "no crap sherlock" reply)
so in 4 years of JVG we only reached 100 points 94 times. in Adelman's 1+ years here we have reached 100 points 40 times already. lookin good RA. just shore up the D a lil more and we're set.
Yes, but consider the two most similar teams (JVG's '06/7 squad and Adelman's '07/8 squad). Very similar amount of games over 100 as well as winning %, although Van Gundy's was higher. I guess my point is that it's hard to score points when you don't have the weapons, and this team's weapons have changed drastically since JVG took over, so we can't really compare the two eras directly. Can we say Clarence Weatherspoon...Ryan Bowen...Charles Oakley...David Wesley...etc.?
adelman has been blessed with much more talent my friend. do you remember who JVG had to work with? wesley as SG? weatherspoon and howard as PF? our bench had bowen, padgett...
We're not scoring better for any one particular reason, but I think the biggest thing you have to look at is the improvement of our bench. Guys like Landry, Brooks, Wafer have given us some consistant offense off the bench that has been abscent in the past. I also think you have to look at the versatility of Ron Artest and how it gives coach Adelman more flexibility with his lineups. Yao is still the same guy. He just has more talent around him now.
and you're right, our ball movement have really been the same (it's just we're making outside shots at a higher rate). let's look at the stats v. golden state, we had 41 baskets, with only 23 assists (that's around half). v. clips, we had 22 assists but shot 40% v. denver, also 22 assists but shot 40% v. spurs, 22 assists v. pacers, only 19 assists and 35% shooting v. miami, 21 assists on 37 baskets and so on, but you see the trend. in the last 10 games, we average 20 assists per game. (leader is utah with 27) in the last 5 games, 21.6 (still in the middle of the league at 15th) under JVG in 04-05, we averaged 21.1 assists/game 05-06, 19.3 (tmac/yao rarely played) 06-07, 21 under adelman 07-08 21.4 this year, 18.9 (with around 20-21 the past 10 games). so really, our "ball movement" is that much better? the fact of the matter is: the past few games, we've scored better simply b/c yao is more aggressive in attacking the double teams and drew fouls and thus put the other team in teh penalty. yao's just taken his game to another level the past 2 games in terms of that aspect. furthermore, our shooters are BLISTERING HOT (like they were 10 games when yao went down last year). the point is: our offense looks great if our shooters make their open shots (the same open shots they've been getting forever) and our stars are aggressive attacking the basket irregardless of what defense they see. the ball movement isn't necessarily better. when people make their shots, your offense looks better.
Too early in the season to make a significant read from it, but its promising. If we were getting as many FTs as the past few years, our scoring would be way down. Of course, those foul shots are usually for attempts that would likely go down, leading to less assists and FGs made.
