How is the coaching staff going to help him improve this offseason........ He really needs to be able to make free throws........Man would that help More aggresive down low.........Quit trying to finger roll the ball man.....You Gotta Dunk That *****..... They need to teach him to play with yao......Because some how he did better without him.....and played like a star......So with yao taking the double team.....It seems like Scola could make the allstar team next year....... Quit flopping...........Its getting him into foul trouble.......Slide your feet and try playing some D... The mid range J.........work on that......the shot a lil bit in front of free throw line........ There is a lot he can work on.....But he was awesome in his starts last year.....and with yao carrying the load down low.......you have to think he can put up good numbers...... He is going to be the third scorer in my eyes....... He is so good but just needs some NBA fundamentals....... He will be a star next year.........Just needs a little help with the little flaws he has.... Anything else yall think he needs help with?
Left hand...got to go left....Ironically the picture you posted may be the only time he went left all year. DD
Refs respect and 1 year experience will help him a lot, over the years he has constantly improved so there is no reason to think he will stop at 28 that is not old age for the type of game he has.
I think he'll continue to improve, and start to play more consistently. I just don't see him developing to the point that he's considered an all-star. Averaging 17 and 10 would be asking for a dramatic improvement, and even that won't make you an all-star.
The only thing Scola needs to work on is passing out of the post. There are times when he decides to make a few moves and he is going to shoot it no matter how many people double him.
Star? Maybe not a star but a very important player for Rockets next season, I belive 3rd scorer. He has already shown he can easily match up with everybody. As you said, he damn gotta DUNK IT. No layups, if you are allowed to score inside just go strong and dunk it. His free throws (the same as T-Mac's) need to improve and he needs to make those jumpers more consistant. I hate flopping and he needs to get this out of his game wne what I missed last season. Scola is a great player but is is having tough time guarding NBA's better power forwads. He gotta work on his footwork, etc to improve his defense on the low block.
work on that J all summer long. If he can extend the range, great. If not, any J will help. Probably should dunk more balls, but you don't really need to practice that, just need to change your mindset. I could see him averaging 15 as our third scorer next year, but maybe the kind of 15 you get because half your games you score 20 and the other half you score 10. Scola would be kind of a hole plugger. If he needed to score, he'd score. If not, his points will dip and he'll do the other things to help us win.
One of the coaches needs to beat him with a broom. So he can take more body contact. (I don't care how wrong that sounds)
man... i noticed that. once we have a set play for him to go down low, against utah, you could see, as soon as he get the ball, they would double team him. instead of passin it out, he would try put so many fakes/hesitations and throw an underscooper when times run out. pretty annoying, hopefully he gets that and the mid range J down.
oh come on, don't expect him to score 20 ppg in his 2nd year in the NBA especially playing with stars like Yao and Tracy.
uhh, yeah right. He might improve statistically in the coming years, similar to other foreign players. It will come mostly from his understanding of NBA and the refs though. I wouldn't expect to see him become an all-star or anything. I fully expect to seem going up weak and going right for the rest of his career.
I like the "he needs to dunk" responses. The only issue is how to add 12 inches to a 28 year old professional athlete's vertical leap. I swear some of you play too many video games or something. I think the skill set is pretty much there with Scola. That is a given for any player from the Euro leagues. Adjusting to the NBA game is what he needs to do AND make those free throws. I expect a solid 15/8 from him this season.
what? it's only 3 more buckets and 4 more rebounds a game. if he plays 35 minutes a game, that's a reasonable expectation.
He's not a 3rd scorer and never will be. With Scola, it's not about the stats he will put up. That's trivial. His value is that his presence on the floor keeps Yao on the floor and enhances Yao's effectiveness. See the Golden State blowout win without T-Mac. You can't double off Scola and take Yao out of the game like you could with the other trash we have been running at power forward the past few years. That's really all you can ask for out of your power forward on this team. Anything more is gravy.
What? A realist analysis of a rockets rookie or young player. Its rare around here so i have to quote you for everyone to read it again.
We have a winner! Forget all the dunking bologna. Scola don't need to dunk. He's got great moves in the post. He needs to add the contact on the defender so he gets the foul call. Make the same moves, create contact with the defender down low, and finish the dipsy doodle with the And 1 or go to the FT line for 2 shots. I'm fine with his passing. He's a Euro. He knows how to move without the ball and pass it. His passing should come with his back to the basket and over the shoulder to the cutters at the rim.
You beat me to it. More than anything else, this will elevate Scola to another level. Of course I want his jumper and FTs to improve, but Scola's inside moves are quirky and throw defenders off. He easily gets players up into the air and needs to take advantage of that. On defense, I was proud of how he reduced the unnecessary fouling as the season progressed. You could see the NBA game grow on him. It's nice to have a PF who can make the opposing PF work hard.
Keep it simple: 1. the always open 12-15 jumper; this shot is always open in zone defenses especially when you have a dominant big man like Yao next to you, maybe even work the glass 2. Drawing contact in the low block; his footwork in the low block is quite good and he can definitely exploit this in the NBA 3. Free throws, because if you can't make these #2 is irrelevant
