So I was listening to the Calvin Murphy show on 790 on the way back home from work and a caller asked about our log jam at both guard positions. Calvin went on about all our guards and then says Scola can play the 2 very well. I was like, "WTF?" Then he went on to say that people who follow Scola and other Euro players know Scola is very good at the two as well as the 3 and 4 and that players oversees know how to play all the positions well. Now I admit I didn't know who Scola was until the trade rumors started but I watched the US vs Argentina game and he didn't play any 2. Can anyone who knows Scala's history verify that he can really play the 2... or was Murph just making stuff up? He also said he can beat any NBA player in shooting.
doubt he could play the 2 in the NBA. probably handles the ball well for a 4. i also dont think he has the range/accuracy to shoot the NBA 3. which is pretty important tool for a guard.
From the vids I've seen so far I think he's too slow to play the 2. He might be able to play the 3, and probably can hold down the 5 if we're going small, but I don't think there's any way he can play the 2. Maybe vs high-schoolers in a pickup game.
Ironically, ex-players typically have no idea what they are talking about. This would be yet another example of that. He's too slow to play the '2.'
I have seen Scola play since many years ago... and I can tell you without a doubt that it is IMPOSSIBLE for him to play as a SG. He is a PF and only a PF.
Murph also said earlier in the show that McGrady becomes merely an "average" player when he plays SF. Did he forget that T-Mac was playing SF his first season here? Was he just average then? And suggesting that Scola could play SG in today's league is just laughable.
For some reason I can't understand, Murph's show is enjoyable to me. It's goofy but entertaining. I had hoped he would have even greater relevance once the season started. If these comments are indicative of serious thoughts on the Rockets, I'll have to quit listening. Let's see.
I don't know about that but Murphy maybe have just been trying to make a point that Scola was a very good ball handler.
