    Easy to explain:

Regression on defense is loss of Dwight Howard
Improvement on offense is: Trevor Ariza shooting splits

There is reason to believe the top 10 offense can be sustained when Dwight comes back (No reason for Ariza to disappear again) and there is reason to think the top 10 defense can return with him.

Look how the Rondo trade hurt Dallas.

    So...top 10 offense without Howard?

Not that simple since Howard played a lot in Jan. But part of it maybe?

I can see why we want him to play offense differently.

Defense is not just Dwight Howard, our defensive focus has taken a toll ever since we started to emphasize on running more and focusing on improving our scoring. We tried to outscore many opponents over the last month or two instead of trying to stop guys. We cannot blame this on Dwight's absence. The players and coaches are at fault. Our missed threes and volume at which we shoot has a lot to do with it.

We are a top 10 offense when Trevor Ariza shoots the ball well and we are not a top 10 offense when Trevor Ariza shoots the ball at a historically bad rate.

Ariza has gotten better in January and especially February, and of course Harden's play has gotten better with his 3% climbing significantly from the start of the season. Add in Josh Smith playing better...

I don't think it's about Dwight at all on offense.

Rockets O being better because :

    1. Harden played extremely well the last 2 months.
    2. Dmo for the most part (except the last few games) being a major surprise.
    3. Without Dwight, we are playing at a much faster pace, see Brewer.

And also at the same time, because our D really sucks since Dwight went out, we were down big fast and often in some of the blowouts, we were able to score lots of those meaningless points late to make a run also.

To just say our O is very good and greatly improved is just a fake.

Ariza is still being Ariza - whose one of the worse offensive players in the league this season that shoot in a high volume.

Yeah good points. Harden started off shooting pretty bad.

Josh Smith... he's been contributing baskets, regardless of the %, that's still something most others on this team cant seem to do consistently right now. Put the ball in the hoop consistently and creating for others... Smith is showing up.

Are the OffRtg and DefRtg numbers pace adjusted? I can't remember?

Houston's offense was also top 10 when Dwight was on the floor, so it isn't his absence that's helped. That really shouldn't need to be said seeing as how Dorsey is starting now and is terrible, but obviously some people can't get away from their pet issues.

Funny how Detroit is #1 and Houston is #3, one subtracted Josh Smith, the other added Josh Smith.

It could be because a team is a complex system of interconnected parts, and not just a sum of players.

I think it's a combination of Ariza and Beverley. As long as one of them is shooting the ball at a decent clip, our offense looks fluid, and flows much better. When both of them are clanging shots off the rim together, that's when things get incredibly mucked up. When 60% of your starting line-up is completely inept on offense, there's not a whole lot you can do to withstand that. In fact, if anything, that sole fact completely convinces me that Harden is the MVP this season.

The Rockets will need Howard defensively. But they did very well defensively at the beginning of the season when Howard was out. So can't blame the absence of Howard for everything.

Losing your starting center and defensive anchor hurts. That's a huge part of why our D sucks. D-Mo might be able to to get into the right positions defensively more often than not, but he is never going to be the intimidating, aggressive defensive presence that Dwight is.

I believe OffRtg and DefRtg are points per 100 possessions. So yes, it is pace adjusted.
