School Computers Used For Fake IDs 3 Students Face Charges Posted: 10:26 a.m. CST February 21, 2002 Updated: 10:35 a.m. CST February 21, 2002 PASADENA, Texas -- Students at Dobie High School, 11111 Beamer Rd., are accused of using school computers to break the law, News2Houston reported in an exclusive investigation. Officers said three students used computers to make fake identification cards. "They can simply go into the computer and change the date of birth and hit print. It's that simple," said Capt. Troy Harrison, with the Pasadena Independent School District Police Department. Harrison said the students worked in the library. They were supposed to make school IDs so students could check out books or use the Internet. "As long as you have friends that work in the library, all you have to do is ask them, 'Can you make me a fake ID?' and they'll be like, you know, yeah, and pay them $5 or $10," student Cassidy Hill said. Police said they discovered the students' illegal activity when two students were caught on minor campus infractions. The officers noticed the birth dates on the students' badges didn't match their school records. Investigators searched the library computer, and found 29 IDs changed so far. The students face charges of tampering with a government document, which is a Class A misdemeanor. The Harris County District Attorney's office is considering whether to file charges. Students are no longer allowed to work in the library, and birth dates have been removed from all student IDs. "You think that students have the maturity to be able to run a computer and to be trusted, but as we find out from time to time, sometimes we give them too much responsibility," Harrison said. http://www.click2houston.com/hou/news/stories/news-124584820020221-100259.html I don't know whether to blame the kids or the adults who weren't monitoring them.
Hehe, We did this too, I had a fake Drivers license for over a year before I turned 19 and was old enough to drink. DaDakota
They shouldn't be suprised, I mean, if its that simple to counterfeit, I'm suprised they only made 29 fake ID's. Besides, if they had that much access, they could've invented fake people in the computer system, and given the ID's out for them, so that there would be no contradiction in the student records. I mean, that seems smarter to me, at least.
Surely it can't be the fault of the people who actually committed the fraud. Somebody else must be responsible.
I remember in school I helped out in the attendance office. The only thing I ever did was use a hex editor to "eliminate" a senior skip day absence some of my friends and I had. And I've felt dirty ever since...
In high school, I was an aide at the Hastings 9th Grade Center. Since Hastings and Hastings 9th are different schools under different rules, they made me a Staff ID (nope I didn't have access to the ID machine, although I had access to the personal files of every student ). One day, some teacher stopped me in the hall and started giving me a hard time cause I didn't have my shirt tucked in. I showed him my Staff ID and he thought I was doing some illegal ****. Then the teacher called over the principal who was walking in the halls. I could see him smiling like he got me good. The principal just said yeah he's my aide, he can do whatever he wants....right in the teacher's face
Don't they have ID making software on the open market now? I am sure that I heard or saw that some place before.
I just heard a UT student was arrested for printing fake licenses from his dorm room at $150 each. Police say he sold over 1,000 Bail has been set at $10k...that shouldn't be a problem since he made $150k selling licenses. link
Yeah, I over estimate people sometimes. Kids being responsible...what was I thinking!?! I never did anything in school to get me in trouble. The only time I ever did get in trouble was for talking too much. I got a check by my name on the board once and that was enough for me. I wouldn't make fake ID's to begin with. And I sure as hell wouldn't do it at school. It's like you're asking to get caught.
Yeah, thanks rock...I feel much better now. I was legal at 18. Maybe I should add this to Kagy's "When did you start to feel old" thread.
