I am not sure how old the information is but i just heard on the radio that it has been approved and the new construction will begin in a month and will be finished by next summer. That's going to be great since i love the other ones and they are rated the number 1 water park in the world. They have stated that the Galveston one is goign to be the most state of the art water park around, which should be pretty nice. There are a bunch of articles about it on the web this is just one of them. http://www.offthekuff.com/mt/archives/002306.html
This....and the new Rainforest Cafe, complete with jungle cruise type ride....and the redevelopment of the Flagship, with a boardwalk, roller coaster, ferris wheel, etc. I heard that over Memorial Day weekend there was not a room available in all of Galveston. That's good news for the local economy.
It's going to really give houston and galveston a better tourist base if we have that now. It's going to be nice...too bad our water is not blue lol.... that place is going to be packed each and every weekend of summer.
Sweet! This is awesome! Aren't they also continuing to improve downtown Houston ? anyone have details about that?
downtown has its own momentum now. it really does. just a fun place to be. whether going for a baseball game...or out to dinner...out just to catch a drink with friends...or even business lunch...it just all looks/feels different now than it once did.
Glad to hear that; long-time coming! Hopefully American cities will continue their progression towards the more European-like city-centers (although we'll never be that foot-friendly since many of their cities were laid out long before autos).
If anyone's into Galveston's bizarre politics and business, the Schliterbahn was (allegedly) pushed through by the Moody Family after Tilman Fertitta started tossing off the idea of building his own waterpark on the island. Fertitta is also known as "The Landry's Dude," and he owns the Rainforrest Cafe on the Seawall as well as (I'm pretty sure) the verrr nice San Luis Resort next door. The Moodys and Fertitta have been going at one another in a Cold War-style arms buildup on the island for years.
He's also now known as the guy who got the city to change their ordinances to allow him to bring white tigers to his downtown aquarium.
This will absolutely ruin the picturesque beauty of Galveston. This on top of the destruction of the highly endangered Double Titted Warbler’s natural habitat.
I'm devastated, being a huge fan of Shlitterbahn. Heck, we have season tickets this year for the 4 of us and plan to go several times to the original (and greatest), along with one or two trips to the S. Padre park. Is that one any good? We've never been to it. Since we go to Houston, League City/Friendswood and Galveston several times a year, the idea of a huge park in Galveston is fantastic! That poor bird. I saw them often growing up, especially on Redfish Island... gone now, I believe. I'm amazed a few still exist. Seeing them take off was a marvel! It's like they're running on the water. With those feet, it looks damn near impossible. (btw, that software works really well, Crew. I accidently typed "****terbahn" and was astonished to see the (un)intentional slur exorcised. bravo!)
WOW, that is awesome. There is a nice reviving of Houston and Galveston going on right now. Gotta love it.
guess it all depends what you're looking for. i find galveston to be unique. it's "solid" sand base was a huge selling point for the island when it was considered among the crown jewels of the south...was touted that it was a coastline you could literally ride your bike on. there are soft sand beaches elsewhere..and those are great. but not all beaches have to be that way.
I agree Max, I am partial due to my childhood being spent almost exclusively in Galveston when on vacation. I remember when the tar used to be pretty nasty, you always had to scrub your feet. I think the water is alot clearner than it was in the 70's and 80's.
Galveston gets the worst of the Gulf because of the silt from the Mississippi. Put us 300 miles to the EAST and we've got crystal clear water like the Carribbean. But, we got the southerly flow and, as a result, all the muddy river flow. But, I've been off the island on days when when the water was clear as a bell. Of course, it was also cold as hell because a norther blew threw and forced that silt from the Mississippi out into the Gulf, but whatever. By the way, this was announced way back in January. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=70930
exactly. it's muddy water. and, like you, have seen days where i can see my feet as clearly as i have in florida beaches.
