Did he really think other GM's would tell him what he wanted to know? Looks like nobody gave him any answers at all.
Nice find...Colangelo seems like the no bull**** kinda GM. Really wanna see how Dawson operates in the war room but thatll never happen.
This came from a special they did on Raptors TV (the canadian NBA TV) in which they basically put a camera in the war room on draft day. So they also showed Colangelo basically having an orgasm when the bucks offered up TJ Ford. Originally, he was chasing Mo Williams and then the Bucks upped the ante and offered Ford and Colangelo went nuts. I wish they would do a show like this for the Rockets and just stick a camera in the war room.
No bull****? He basically just called people up begging for info which he didn't get. You could almost hear Danny Ainge laugh when he asked who they were taking.
He never asked Ainge who they were taking, he asked him if there was a reason he passed on the guy. And I wouldn't be surprised if they did share information, there's a pretty short list of NBA GM's and it's a good idea not to piss each other off, if somebody asks another GM something that won't hurt them then I would expect them to answer if they knew.
Yeah...seems like he was doing a pretty good job trying to manage his draft. On the other hand, I could see how an alternative approach could be useful...and that woudl be worrying less about what other people are doing and/or know and more about what you want and know. It is somewhat shocking to think he didn't trust his staff enough to give him all accurate info on Marcus Williams, and that he expected Danny Ainge would (I mean, they're in the same freaking division).
Yeah on one hand he looked good and active on the phones, but on the other his staff sat around looking like complete morons. Not saying that they are morans at all, and perhaps all their research was already complete, but there seemed to be no need to have more than 3 people in that room at all, not a packed house.
What shocked em the most was how everyone had access to someone from the other teams. It didn't take him but a few seconds to reach folks. I rolled when he was like someone get me this team and some staff dude is typing in his cellie.
The most interesting part to me was how everyone else was sitting there not doing ****. I remember seeing a clip from the Rockets' war room three years ago or so when they were laughing because someone picked a stiff center...
that's hilarious, our guys laughed off Kaman....... i remember seeing footage from the year we traded for Eddie Griffin ... i was amazed how lost they seemed at times ... rudy was forgetting names, it was pretty strange
RapsTV has aired a "Behind the Draft" for the last 5 seasons, IIRC. The first couple were great, with some very revealing info on what goes on behind the scenes. The way the boards are done, calls made, ideas shared, etc.. Last year's wasn't so great when Babcock decided to restrict a lot of the juicier info (all content goes by management first, of course, since the station is owned by the team), but it's been a pleasure learning about Colangelo and seeing his experience and contacts play themselves out a bit. AFAIK, the Raptors are still the only NBA with their own digital channel. The summer is fairly dull with lots of WNBA and NBATV repeats - but during the season it's gold. There are 60~90 minute pregame shows (depending on game time) as well as 60 minute post game shows, including all the postgame interviews with players and coaches. This year they set up a studio right inside the main concourse of the arena and fans can watch it all happen (scream in the background, etc) and they've had many guests such as David Stern, Steve Smith, Samuel L Jackson (huge Raps fan), etc... There are also daily "Full Court Press" shows with members of the local media talking in a panel... "Raptors Daily" is a 30 minute news type show at 6pm showing interviews from the day's practice or shootaround... "Hoops" is a 2 hour radio call-in-show on the local sports station that is simulcast on RapsTV... "Double Dribble" is a PTI type back and forth between the 2 radio guys... there are other behind the scenes shows that hilight interviews, on floor discussions, charity/community involvement, etc... There are 120 some-odd other NBA games shown in HD, NCAA games, NBATV content, Inside Stuff... All for just $2.95 a month (digital package req'd of course). I consider Raptor fans lucky for all the coverage, considering we have 4 daily newspapers, 3 all sports TV stations, an all-sports radio station... it's just too bad much of it is still hockey-centric, which makes RapsTV an oasis of basketball sanity.
I agree Colangelo's staff just seemed to be sitting with their thumbs up their @$$es. Almost half the time the guy sitting immediately to the right of Colangelo was just snacking away. I wonder what he was eating. At the 2:50 mark, Colangelo leaned to his right and said "Marcus is sliding.." and the guy, While still munching away, goes "yeah yeah.." weird.. what are they there for?
that makes it even funnier. He didn't know that Marcus Williams got busted for stealing laptops? doesn't he read Bill Simmons?
Him asking people why they didn't pick Williams is very odd. It shows that they were unprepared and didn't do the full research. I do like how he basically asked for Deng.
