I picked these because most people who I ask say these, but I included an "other" option so if your choice isn't there you can still vote.
I was young when I saw it, but nothing has ever scared me as much as the 1st JAWS... It and Psycho have had the greatest determinable fear factor...After JAWS came out, the tourist rate at ocean-side beaches dropped something like 40 % for 2 straight years, and after the shower scene in Psycho, shower usage dropped something like 30 % for over a year....THAT's scaring people...
A lot of people tell me that the Excorcist isn't that scary, but everytime I see that damn movie, I can't be anywhere alone in the dark without feeling a bit scared. Like if I'm up late watching tv, every little sound makes me think something evil is outside and if I try to sleep, every shadow seems to be something menacing. I think what makes that movie scary for me isn't the special effects or the way the movie was made, it's just the subject matter and that evil voice.
The original Nightmare on Elm Street scared me when I first saw it (which was before the sequels reared their ugly heads). The Wizard of Oz used to scare the crap out of me when I was a little kid.
I read the book, but I never saw the movie. Did the movie do the book justice? It is probably one of the scariest things I've read. From the beggining when he kills that little child, man. I can't remember, did he pull the kids arm out of the socket? I just know that the kid had one gruesome death.
Amityville Horror was scary and I think was a true story. Damien, the Omen. Hell Night scared the living crap out of me when I was 9. Most of the Friday the 13th movies. I'll vote for The Exorcist, I guess. Anybody ever seen this one called Slithus, or something close to that? It came out in the 70's I think.
based on would be appropriate, I guess. I can't even remember the story, really. I think I'll watch it again with my wife sometime when the kids are asleep. I haven't seen a real movie in 4 years besides ET and Babe.
That book scared the crap out of me. Granted, I was only nine at the time... That taught me not to read books my mom left lying around. I tend to find books scarier than movies anyway. The images I imagine are usually far more frightening than any filmmaker can come up with. An example of this was "The Shining." Although Kubrik's movie was a full-on freak fest, it ignored most of the deeper psychological undertones of Stephen King's book. It's a shame, because I found those to be both the most frightening and most affecting parts of the story.
The Ring. I'm still waiting for my tv to go to static one day and that video to come on. there will be a me shaped whole in the nearest wall if that happens.
Hellraiser,Night of the living dead and Amityville Horror all were scary to me. Yea that was a very scary book but kind of lost me toward the end...The movie comes no where close to the book. I would like to see The Talisman made into a move..great book.
IT is the scariest movie i've ever seen. alot of it is just the clown thing, i'm not really scared of clowns, just the idea of killer ones. i remember after they showed it on tv being terrified of seeing that bookcover at the bookstore.
