No complaints. Be careful though - usually they want to bundle a ton of other services with the "27/month deal". If you play hardball with them you should be able to get it (and only it) for the listed price. I've used it for almost 5 years now. Oh, and get a hardware router/firewall. Otherwise your machine will be beaten to death by worms and micrSoft induced trojans. I can watch my firewall and see a steady stream of wannabe attacks and portscans.
Ive had it going on for 2 years now. No complaints. Road Runner advertises it is faster, but I have the upgraded package I think.
SBC sucks. I wish I didn't need a home phone. But they're DSL department gives me hope, especially if everything that CSR "Todd" told me during our negotations last Friday are true (my one-year contract expired last Friday and I called to negotiate a new deal so I wouldn't pay $50/ month).
Yes. This is something that is NOT advertised. After your contract is up, it goes to $49.99/month. Luckily, I had remembered that I signed up for DSL last July. When I looked at my monthly statement, it said that my contract expired July 16, 2004. When I talked to Todd, I asked him what would have happened had I not called. He said I would have been on a month-to-month plan (sort of like cell phones), where the rate is $49.99/month, plus all the B.S. taxes and fees and crap.
For the price, I'm not complaining. A few times, my connection would get kicked off, but it connect right back up. It's good for downloading.
drapg, so if you call before the one-year offer ends, one can still get the 27 dollar a month rate? for how long? Mine expires in december, and I sure as heck will not be paying 50 a month.
I had SBC/Yahoo DSL for a year....and not a day longer. My connection speeds were less than ideal, and I had it in two seperate residences, which were not that far away from the box. The day my year contract ended I switched to cable and have been happy ever since. If you have the option, get cable. It's faster, customer service is better, and there is no year long contract that you are locked into. If DSL is the only option in your area, well...it's better than dial up.
I've had DSL since it came out and I love it...However, I loved it when I paid $39.99...now I pay $49.99... I tried to get cable once, but they would have to run the cable over my house... Anyway, I may try again...
Does SBC/Yahoo DSL require a phoneline? I'm moving to a new apartment in Dallas that is serviced by them. I haven't had a need for a landline for years, and would rather not get one just so I can get DSL. EDIT: I checked their web page, they require an SBC phoneline. That is such a rip off, I get about 2mbps downloads on my Verizon DSL for $24.95/month at my current complex without the need for a voice line
You know, that IS a good question, but I don't know. Based on my talk with Todd, there doesn't seem to be a set methodology. We negotiated some problems I had with SBC and got some of the BS fees they were charging me over to my DSL fees, thus making my DSL cheaper than the advertised $26.99/month plan. I recommend calling and asking. If they say no, try again with another CSR. If you get 4-5 "No's", then you may be SOL. Post the results if anyone tries. You guys got me curious now.
I think if you just call and say you're cancelling because you can't afford the increased rate, they'll probably extend you. The threat of cancellation usually generates action, I think. At least that's what I plan on doing.
But can you do this now, even if you're contract doesn't expire for 6 months? That's an interesting question. I don't know if they'll let you lock in these current rates even if you threaten to cancel 6 months from now. give it a try though!
Around 40-50 bucks. Worth the money I promise. I really like the Linksys WRT54G. Built in wireless and a great firmware package for about 50 bucks.
