I just moved from an apartment complex in zip code 77087 to an apartment complex in zip code 77502. My DSL connection is noticeably slower in all aspects. Before I moved, my DSL connection was just as fast as the Roadrunner connection I previously had before. I never checked my speed before I moved, but according to a "speed checker" over at www.dslreports.com, my Download speed currently is 162.0 kbps. Is this good for DSL? I know that it is said that the farther away you are from the SWB tower, the slower your speed will be, but how extreme can the decrease in speed be? I checked over at www.dslreports.com, but couldn't really find much info with my current zip code (I live in Pasadena). What I do want to know, however, is if there is anything I can do with my settings to allow me to surf the internet faster? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
first I would do the tweak tests on dslreports.com after doing them do another speed test. if after tweaking out your machine you are still slow... distance from the CO could be a major factor. it may also be your apartments wiring. the only way to tell if it's your wiring is to call for a tech to come check it out. I know at my house, they rewired my 'phone box', it cost me $60 for the repair, but i'm surfing faster than i ever have before... and apartment wiring may be different. SWB/Yahoo also has tiered pricing, make sure you aren't paying for their lower speed DSL. good luck.
From my understanding of SBC and their DSL services...for each package in their pricing scheme, there is an acceptable range of download speeds and as long as the technician's test speed falls within that range (even if it's smack dab on the low end), it's considered acceptable. Also, do what rH suggested...make sure you don't have the slowest/a slower package than what you want.
Sounds to me like it is a distance issue. I moved from an apartment to house, and my speeds dropped dramatically. I tried tweaks, patches, nothing helped. I called SBC and tried to upgrade to a better package, and they said I lived too far away to get any of the better guarenteed speeds. My contract finally ended in June and I got setup with Roadrunner. Since then I've been very happy
boomboom is right...SBC has caps depending on what pricing range you are paying. The same thing happened to me once...but it turns out they were putting the 'caps' in effect right around the time I moved...combined with a distance issue, and my d'load times slowed a lot. Still better than dialup, tho'.
