What do you guys think about adding a question on federal tax returns right above the signature block, where it asks you how you want your tax dollars allocated, that looks something like this: Debt Service [ ]% (this probably has to be pre-filled so we don't default, and also to give people an idea/reminder each year just how much it is) Military [ ]% Education [ ]% etc. etc. Total 100% What would be comical would be to also add in requested amount by each department/category and the amount actually spent (as a % of collection) the prior year: Requested Prior Year Your AllocationDebt Service N/A X% [ ]% Military 35% X% [ ]% Education 20% X% [ ]% etc. etc. Total 300% 800% 100% The intent of course is so that people who want big military can allocate more to military, and those who want more to spend more on social services can allocate more to social services, etc. etc. I'm talking about personal income tax only (and I think I'd be in favor of not adding this to corporate income tax, which would remain at the discretion of Washington -- too much risk that corporations would try to find ways to starve the EPA and the SEC and other regulatory agencies to death), and I know even then logistics would be a nightmare (and we probably need a constitutional amendment to implement), but I'm really just interested in your thoughts and reactions to the concept. Maybe some will view it as undemocratic, but it seems to me that it's time to add a "House" component to the long-standing "Senate" (one person, one vote) component of democracy.
